I know many in the Protestant and non-Catholic world viewed recent scandals
in the Catholic Church as a consequence of God's wrath. Indeed, the
judgment of God certainly did expose perverse and deeply entrenched
sin among certain leaders in the Catholic Church. While this exposing
of sin is not yet over, the Holy Spirit has also been speaking to me
about a special visitation that is about to fall upon many in the Catholic
Church.
As I have known the Lord, His judgment upon what is sinful is linked
to the release of mercy upon the righteous. Even in my personal life,
when the Lord judged areas that were wrong in me, He hemmed me in so
He could release me spiritually. I can say like the Psalmist, "We
went through fire and through water; yet Thou didst bring us out into
a place of abundance" (Ps 66:12). When I consider the dealings of
God in my life, I can sincerely say, "It is good for me that I was
afflicted, that I may learn Thy statutes" (Ps 119:71).
On a larger scale, the Lord exposes, judges and destroys the work of
the enemy so He can reveal awesome wonders of His grace among the righteous.
Indeed, Christ came to do two basic things: "To proclaim the favorable
year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God" (Isa 61:2).
The outcome of divine vengeance is "comfort [to] all who mourn .
. . giving them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead
of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting"
(vs. 2, 3).
Spiritual Springtime
Thus, what was a clear expression of God's anger toward certain Catholic
priests was, at the same time, an act of mercy toward those oppressed
by the sin of those in leadership. Additionally, those sincere Catholic
leaders who have truly loved God are about to receive a visitation of
mercy. This outpouring will bring healing and a unique sweetness of
spirit among those Catholics who truly love the Lord. Indeed, the tenderness
of God's love will bring a new spiritual beginning for many. Those who
felt helpless and afflicted by sin in the church are about to enter
a spiritual springtime.
"For He has brought low those who dwell on high, the unassailable
city; He lays it low, He lays it low to the ground, He casts it to the
dust. The foot will trample it, the feet of the afflicted, the steps
of the helpless . . . Indeed, while following the way of Thy judgments,
O Lord, we have waited for Thee eagerly; Thy name, even Thy memory,
is the desire of our souls.
"At night my soul longs for Thee, indeed, my spirit within me seeks
Thee diligently; for when the earth experiences Thy judgments the inhabitants
of the world learn righteousness" (see Isa 26:5-9).
Such has been the cry of a growing minority in the Catholic Church.
God has heard and He is drawing near.
The Signature of This Revival: A Deep Love
For Jesus
I do not think this move of God will fall upon the entire Catholic community;
in my view, it will be limited to local churches in various cities.
But where people are praying for healing, it will come. And it will
be a true outpouring from the Holy Spirit that will touch thousands
of congregations. Catholics will not cease being Catholic in a denominational
sense, but the Lord will look past the doctrinal concerns many Protestant
Christians have with Catholicism and, as the Spirit of God always does,
He will see and respond to the cry of human hearts.
The centerpiece of this revival will not be signs or wonders; although
there will be genuine miracles. Instead, the preeminent characteristic
of this visitation will be a deep overflow of love for Jesus. God will
raise up many among the Catholics whose lives will truly manifest the
maturity and substance of Jesus Christ.
Many of these revived Catholic churches will be instrumental in reaching
the poor and forgotten in the inner cities. Additionally, anointed Catholic
priests will be accepted into many citywide church events that, in the
past, were deemed off limits to both sides of the Christian divide.
A new sense of unity, born of love for Jesus, will spread, even revitalizing
churches that have no organic connection with the Catholic community.
Intercede For a Great Outpouring
I believe it is time to accept Christ's passion for all of His sheep,
and to begin a focused prayer advance for the Holy Spirit to touch Catholics
around the world. Surely this move of God will ignite Catholics from
many nations. Yet, the Lord emphasized to me that this visitation would
touch the Catholic Church in America in a unique way. As the passions
of God are restored to His people, the Holy Spirit will use many fervent
Catholics to change this nation. The impact will spread around the world.
As always, our call is to pray. Let us seek God, and join with those
in Catholicism who are praying for a great, sweeping outpouring of the
Holy Spirit. Let us also war against the sense of betrayal and confusion
that seeks to imprison many Catholics, especially warring against discouragement
in those in leadership positions.
The Lord said that if we would intercede for a spiritual springtime
to fall and refresh Catholics, He would include us in it when it comes.
Prayer and Mercy
The Bible tells us that every word should be confirmed by two or three
witnesses, and it should be presented publicly and to let the others
judge. I know that many sincere Christians believe that God has shut
the door on Catholicism. By way of reminder, the above witness is about
