Kathy DeGraw: How to Overcome Toxic Thoughts & Renew Your Mind Biblically

It All Starts with the Mind

Toxic thoughts, negative thinking, fear cycles, rumination... What if? Why me? I'll never change. I'll lose it again. Something bad is about to happen.

Friends, even the most faith-filled Believer is not exempt from a mental attack. The enemy is always looking for an opportunity to steal, kill, and destroy. As it says in John 10:10 NKJV, "The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly."

If he can't steal your salvation, he will try to steal your peace. If he can't destroy your destiny, he will attempt to destroy your confidence. And he almost always starts in the mind. Every stronghold begins as a thought that was never taken captive.

Toxic Thoughts Are the Seeds of Future Strongholds

I have ministered in deliverance for over two decades, and I can tell you this: toxic thinking is not harmless. It is a doorway. It is an agreement. It is often the seed of a future stronghold if left unchecked. But here's the good news. You do not have to live in mental torment. You can evict toxic thoughts. You can renew your mind. You can break agreement with lies, and you can walk in supernatural peace.

The Cycle of Toxic Thinking

Toxic thinking usually follows a pattern. A thought comes. You entertain it. You rehearse it. You personalize it. You build a narrative around it. And before you know it, it feels like truth.

"I lost a job before. I'll lose this one too."

"My spouse didn't answer. Something must be wrong."

"I felt a pain in my chest. It must be serious."

"Nothing good ever happens for me."

Many of these are perceptions, not realities. But your brain does not always distinguish between perceived threat and actual threat. It reacts to repetition. This is where spiritual warfare meets neuroscience. Your brain forms neural pathways based on repetition. What you rehearse becomes reinforced.

Romans 12:2 MEV says, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

Transformation happens through renewing the mind—not ignoring thoughts, not pretending they don't exist, but renewing. That means you have a responsibility, and you have authority.

We Are Commanders over Our Thoughts

Scripture is clear. We are not victims of our thoughts. We are commanders over them.

"For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:4–5 NKJV) (Photo via Unsplash)

Notice it says "pulling down" strongholds. That means strongholds can be dismantled, but they must first be identified. A toxic thought is often an argument against the knowledge of God. It contradicts His Word. It questions His goodness. It challenges your identity.

The original context of taking thoughts captive implies asking, "Does this thought obey the Messiah? Does it align with truth?" If the answer is no, it does not get to stay.

Recognize, Reject, Replace

There is a practical strategy I teach frequently because it works: recognize, reject, and replace. First, recognize the thought; call it what it is. This is fear. This is rejection. This is a lie. This is a vain imagination.

Second, reject it; break agreement with it. Agreement gives it power. When you say, "I break agreement with this lie in Jesus' name," you are shutting the door spiritually. Romans 8:15 NKJV says, "For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, 'Abba, Father.'" Notice it says, "bondage again to fear." That means even we as Believers can slip back into fear if we are not vigilant.

Third, replace the lie with truth. This is where many people stop short. They reject but do not replace, and an empty space often gets filled again with negativity. Replace fear with identity. Replace doubt with promises. Replace condemnation with adoption. If the lie says, "I am no good," replace it with "I am chosen and beloved."

Ephesians 1:4 CJB says, "In the Messiah He chose us in love before the creation of the universe to be holy and without defect in His presence." You cannot hold two opposing thoughts at the same time. You cannot think negative and positive simultaneously, so choose the one that aligns with Heaven.

Repetition and Brain Rewiring

God designed your brain with neuroplasticity. That means it can change. It can form new pathways. It can heal. The enemy tries to lock you into trauma-based thinking, survival mode, and hopeless loops. The Holy Spirit renews, restores, and reprograms. As you repeatedly declare truth, you reinforce new neural pathways. This is both Biblical and scientific.

"Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think on these things." (Philippians 4:8 MEV)

"Think on these things." That is a command. It is also a strategy. When you consistently think on truth, you starve toxic thoughts.

When Thoughts Become Strongholds

A stronghold does not appear overnight. It develops through repeated agreement. Fear of storms started as a thought. It became a pattern, then a reaction, then a stronghold, but strongholds can be dismantled. (Photo via Unsplash)

"Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." (James 4:7 NKJV)

Resisting begins in the mind. Submission begins in agreement with truth. When you fail to capture lies, you risk building a fortress for the enemy. When you capture them, you dismantle his construction plan.

Questions to Ask Yourself:

• What toxic thought do I rehearse most often?

• When did that pattern begin?

• What lie have I believed about myself?

• Have I broken agreement with it out loud?

• What Scripture will I use to replace it?

• Am I feeding fear more than faith?

Awareness is powerful. Ownership is freeing.

Prayer Declarations for Evicting Toxic Thoughts

Father, I repent for every lie I have believed about myself, my future, and my identity. I break agreement with fear, rejection, doubt, and torment in Jesus' name. I take every thought captive and command it to obey Christ.

I declare that my mind is being renewed according to Romans 12:2. I refuse to go into bondage again to fear. I cry out, "Abba Father!" I declare that my brain is being rewired by the power of the Holy Spirit. I choose truth over lies, peace over panic, faith over fear. I evict every toxic thought and command it to leave now, in Jesus' name.

You Are Not Powerless

The enemy may knock, he may whisper, he may suggest, but he does not have legal authority unless you give him agreement. You are not your thoughts. You are not your past patterns. You are not your trauma. You are a child of God. You have the mind of Christ. You have the Holy Spirit as your co-laborer.

If you have been battling mental chaos, do not give up. Repetition builds pathways. Faith builds freedom. Consistency builds peace. Stay in the Word. Write your declarations. Keep them visible. Speak them daily. Surround yourself with truth-filled teaching. Use the tools available to you.

Freedom is not accidental; it is intentional. 2026 is the year you stop tolerating toxic thinking and start walking in clarity, authority, and peace. It is time to evict the lies and live in freedom.
