Melissa Nordell: Healing the Land That Mourns

Melissa Nordell, Visalia, CA
Jul 31, 2026

In this time of rededication of the land back to the Lord, He has revealed by the Spirit that we need to go deeper and heal the land that mourns. As warriors, God has used us to break curses and evil ties, restore covenants, walk the land in prayer walks, redig the wells and cisterns, plead the Blood of Jesus, call for redemptive gifts to come alive, and anoint the land. But have we cleansed and healed the land that grieves? There is a distinction.

Where abject sin has taken place on the land, the land always grieves until it is cleansed and healed. There are many Scriptures that have been overlooked which prove that the land can mourn from sin, which results in harm to the people living there. This is fact and not metaphor, since there is a true spiritual connection between land and humanity and their corresponding grief.

What Causes a Land to Mourn?

One Scripture that shows that it is not just the people who mourn is Joel 1:10 (NKJV), which says, "The field is wasted, the land mourns; for the grain is ruined, the new wine is dried up, the oil fails." This Scripture records the prophet Joel describing how the land mourned due to the sin of rejecting God, and the drought following was not by natural circumstances. The sin resulted in crops being destroyed and the land becoming desolate, lifeless. When the land mourned, the people of that land also mourned and were lifeless. The Bible records that it is not climate change that brings drought, but sin.

Land remains in mourning unless the sins are repented of and the land is cleansed by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ. This is done by Christians who know the power and authority Jesus died to give them. Desolation, lawlessness, joylessness, financial ruin and lack of salvations occur in areas where there have been such sin as turning away from God, murder, mistreatment of people, slavery, idol worship, ungodly war, abortion, church transgressions, antisemitism, and all other sins prohibited by God, causing the land to grieve.

For example, regarding idols and bloodshed, Ezekiel 36:18 says, "So I poured out my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they had defiled it with their idols" (NIV).

We see that antisemitism brings a curse; however, blessing Israel and the Jewish people bring blessings. In Genesis 12:3 it says, "I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you" (NIV). Whenever the United States has blessed Israel, the land and people have prospered. However, when we have not helped them, we have suffered greatly.

Also, Hosea 4:2–3 states more sins that defile: "By swearing and lying, killing and stealing and committing adultery, they break all restraint, with bloodshed upon bloodshed. Therefore the land will mourn; and everyone who dwells there will waste away with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air; even the fish of the sea will be taken away" (NKJV).

Bringing Deliverance to the Land

Houses and land can experience deliverance just as well as people can. When people carry grief, we find the root of that despair, plead the blood of Jesus over them, and ask the Lord to heal their grief. We do the same for land that mourns. In the beginning, in God's original plan, the land was prosperous and healthy, with everything Adam and Eve needed; but it was defiled with the lies and temptations of satan. Now we can redeem the land by repenting and cleansing the land of whatever sins have been committed since that time.

When God's people repent of their sins and heal the land, God will make the land flourish, as He says in Ezekiel 36:33–35: "This is what the Sovereign Lord says, 'On the day I cleanse you from all your sins, I will resettle your towns, and the ruins will be rebuilt. The desolate land will be cultivated instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass through it. They will say, "This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden; the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited"'" (NIV). Redeeming the Land Brings Freedom to the People

In this wonderful time of rededication of the land back to God, it is imperative that we follow the Holy Spirit to redeem land that is mourning so that people living on that land can be set free. We must go deeper than we have before and seek the Lord Himself for restoration, even in the things that might seem small. Every bit of darkness that is dispelled brings light and healing to the land, bringing freedom to the people.

A recurring Scripture that has been used during this rededication of America season is 2 Chronicles 7:14 . However, this time let us emphasize the last word of the verse: "If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land" (KJV, emphasis mine). Again, this is another example of God willingly healing the land after people repent of their sins.

There are many examples where intercessors have done this with good fruit as a result. Once, a local church was having issues with finances and various attacks, so I, along with the intercessors in my class that I was teaching, prayer walked around the church, anointing the doors with oil. Soon, we found that a hanging had taken place there, as revealed by the Holy Spirit to two of the intercessors.

The class also noticed where witchcraft symbols had been carved in the sidewalk, which needed to be cleansed by the blood of the Lamb. So, we spoke out loud, repenting for what was done by the ungodly hanging and for the markings by the witches (which were a symbol of anarchy), dripped anointing oil together on the sites, broke the curses in both places, pleaded the blood of Jesus over the sites, called for the redemptive gifts to come forth, then declared in the heavenlies that the sites of sin were cleansed of their mourning. As a result, the finances improved at the church, more people came to that church, and the pastor now had clarity where he had once felt confusion.

In another area, the Lord revealed to my class and I that we needed to repent for heavy alcohol consumption there. We did so, and broke the curses, pleaded the blood of Jesus over that city, called for the redemptive gifts to prosper, then declared healing for the land's mourning. The very next week, we saw in a news report that the city council had denied a permit for liquor to be sold on one popular high-traffic corner, which already had liquor stores on each of the other three corners. The news source thought it was newsworthy, because it was the first time an alcohol permit was ever denied in that city. They also reported that the city had the highest per capita number of alcohol sale permits in the entire United States—until we interceded. These things might seem small, but they all bore fruit through our obedience to intercede.

Go Deeper and Further

In still another city, where I was teaching transformational intercession, the Lord spoke to three of us in the group and said we needed to go deeper and further in finding roots which involved human sacrifice. We did not know at the time that the Lord had spoken the same thing to each of us individually. There was nothing regarding human sacrifice in the history books or museums, so we had a dilemma. I told them to tell no one until we had some evidence, but to continue to intercede. We got together after that Sunday because Cindy Jacobs was speaking at our church. That day, Cindy Jacobs stopped in the middle of her message and pointed her finger at the audience. She said, "I heard the Lord say that there are a couple of intercessors here whom the Lord has told something about history on this land, and the Lord says, 'Go deeper.'" Then she pointed to the area behind the podium and said to look just beyond the church property.

Afterwards, we went to that area, and two of us had visions of human sacrifices taking place there. We also found drug paraphernalia on that site. Then we went to another place of presumed sacrifice on a tall rock, saw the sacrifices in the spirit, and cleansed that piece of land as well, healing it of its mourning. Immediately we felt relief in the spirit realm. That evening, and with each repentance we did at that church, more people came to the church. There were more salvations, deliverance was done with very little effort, and more people dropped off their drugs at the church office, saying that they wanted to know Jesus. (Photo via Unsplash)

Let's Heal the Land of America!

Let us show naysayers, and those who want to replace this republic with socialism and communism, that America is not a horrible place because of its past sins—and it's not "the evilest country" as some would say—but that it is a Christian nation, trying to glorify God and bring righteousness to its people. We will cleanse and heal the land that grieves.

Let us redeem those areas of sin in our land by removing mourning through our repentance, restoring covenants that have been broken, breaking evil ties, then calling for the redemptive gifts of the land to flourish. By so doing, there will be no reason left (or no inroad) for all this negativity and slander to come in, and we will bring light and healing out of the darkness. Let us give satan no reason to accuse America in the courtrooms of Heaven by slamming shut all doors to sin on the land.

A Prayer to Heal the Land

After you discover the root of the defilement in your area, such as idolatry, murder, greed, mistreatment of others, broken covenants, antisemitism, etc., make a declaration out loud to redeem the land.

Here is a sample declaration prayer that you might speak, which will heal the land after discovering the root of the defilement:

Lord, we repent of the sin of (name the sin) in this place. Father, forgive all the people who committed the sin here in (name the city or region), for they did not know what they had done (Luke 23:34), or how it defiled this land. This sin, which has continued until this day, cannot legally continue, because we repent and heal this land, right now.

Father, we plead the blood of Jesus over this land by your Word and break all curses and evil ties off this land. We also call for the redemptive gifts of this land to go forth in abundance, and we restore all broken godly covenants. We thereby cleanse this land of its mourning and grief by the power and authority given to us by Jesus Christ and His shed blood. We legislate in the heavenly courts, by divine authority, that there is no longer any reason to hold this land, nor its people, captive due to these sins, all in the matchless name of Jesus.

It's Not the End of a Celebration but the Beginning

July 4, 2026 was not the end of The United States' 250th birthday year celebration. This anniversary year is just starting. We must continue to transform cities and nations in the mighty name of Jesus to set the captives free. Let us make sure the "kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ" (Revelation 11:15 NKJV), declaring that these areas of land are cleansed and healed, in the mighty name of Jesus!
