Darren Canning: The Divine Pivot - Finding Momentum When the Brook Dries Up

Darren Canning, Ontario, Canada
May 14, 2026

There are seasons in the human experience where the only thing that feels real is the wait. You hit a wall, a sudden impasse, where the path forward vanishes and the silence of God feels heavy. You may feel like you are stuck in this thicket, blinded by a darkness that makes the reality of grace feel like a distant memory.

When your focus is fixed on what is missing rather than what is present, a specific kind of pain forms in the heart—a localized ache of "not yet." But in the economy of the Kingdom, an impasse is often a holy illusion.

The Lesson of the Dried Brook

For three years, the prophet Elijah lived by the Brook Cherith. It was a season of miraculous, stationary provision: water from the stream and meat delivered by ravens. It was comfortable, predictable, and sustained by God. Then, the water stopped.

"Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. Then the word of the Lord came to him: 'Go at once to Zarephath...'" (1 Kings 17:7–9 NIV)

We often mistake a "dried brook" for a closed door or a sign of divine silence. In reality, it is usually a call. When resources dry up, it is rarely a punishment; it is a pivot. God uses the drying brook to nudge us toward a new direction, a new meaning, and a new level of faith. There is always momentum in Christ, even when we are standing still. (Photo via Unsplash)

The Journey of Faith and Hope

Faith brings us on a journey where the destination is often secondary to the connection. As long as we hear God, there is hope. With the hope that comes by hearing, our very lives can be extended. We may face sickness, but we find healing; we may feel the shadow of death, but we walk away from it; we may experience lack, but we know God will provide.
His voice brings an assurance that what is naturally impossible is spiritually possible.

"He sent out His word and healed them; He rescued them from the grave." (Psalm 107:20 NIV)

Sometimes we feel like we missed an opportunity or missed the mark. Often, this is because we are caught up in a works mindset and fail to realize the reality of the grace of God. His grace keeps us even in the quiet times. A quiet time is not a punishment from God, but an opportunity to hear His voice in new ways.

The Power of the Silence

I believe, in the life of every Christian, God works things in such a way that fullness of life comes as we get used to the silence. The silence is an opportunity to grow. Just as a seed has to be planted into the ground and die before it becomes the plant that will grow tall, our own "quiet seasons" are the soil for our future strength.

"Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds." (John 12:24 NIV)

If you are in that season of silence and darkness, do not fear. God is sending the rain, and that rain is going to run into the seed, and the seed will explode into life. You are about to enter into your best time yet.

Faith Through the Rhéma Word

Living this life takes a specific kind of fuel: the gift of faith. Scripture tells us exactly how this fuel is replenished: "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17 KJV)

In this passage, the Greek word used for "word" is rhéma (Strong's G4487). While logos refers to the timeless, written Word of God (Strong's G3056), rhéma refers to an utterance—a specific, "now" word spoken by the Spirit directly to your situation. (Photo via Public Domain Pictures)

Rhéma is the voice that whispers to you while you sit by your own dried-up brook. It is the word that gives you the courage to move when you'd rather mourn what was lost. Faith isn't just believing in a historical God; it is hearing the living voice of God today and having the courage to follow where He leads next.

A Prayer for Your Journey

Today I pray that the silence will become a place where you meet the living God. I pray for His word to explode in your spirit and for the peace of the Holy Spirit to be with you. I pray that you will find the new destination and have the courage to live in a new, powerful way.
