Don't Let the Enemy Rob You of Your Identity
Several years ago, I had a prophetic dream. In the dream, I was living in a church building. I was fast asleep when I awoke to find thieves breaking in. They were searching for my passport. I challenged them with a loud shout, and they ran off.
I believe this dream was a picture of how the enemy has been robbing the Church of her true identity. In the past few months, God has been reminding me of this. We are living through a pivotal moment in history. And we, as God's people, need to know who we are, Whose we are, and what we carry in the Spirit.
Do You Know Who You Are?
How you see God is very important. How others see you is relatively important, depending on how much their opinion matters to you. But how you see yourself can direct or derail your destiny. That's why the enemy immediately attacked Jesus' identity after the Father affirmed Him at the beginning of His ministry:
"And a voice from Heaven said, 'This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.'" (Matthew 3:17 NIV)
"The tempter came to Him and said, 'If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.'" (Matthew 4:3 NIV)
In these days, God wants us to be completely secure in our true identity in Christ. You were created with significance, purpose, gifts, abilities, and resources. To deny these is not humility; it actually diminishes the treasure that God has placed within you. Don't allow the enemy to rob you of anything that Jesus' blood has bought you.
An Identity Upgrade
This is a season where the Lord is upgrading the identity of His people. He's reminding us who we are and what we carry in the Spirit. He is breaking off false humility and insecurity so that we carry a humble confidence and deep assurance of our true identity in Christ. (Photo via PickPik)
There is territory to occupy. There are battles to fight. There is much at stake. Often, as Believers, we shrink back or hide our light for fear of being seen as arrogant or proud. When we do that, we forfeit God's call. And the unrighteous step into positions of responsibility and authority. Darkness prevails simply because the light didn't shine.
No more. There is a shift happening in the spirit. God is calling you higher and further. But the advancement and promotion begin with an upgrade in your thinking. You need to know who you really are in Christ. Take hold of everything that God has made available to you by faith.
Ephesians 1 is a key passage. You have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. You are called, you are chosen, you are adopted. You are redeemed; you are forgiven.
We cannot be like the Israelites, who, when the time came to take the land of Canaan, said, "We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them" (Numbers 13:33 NIV). Grasshoppers are tiny, insignificant, defenseless, and fragile. That's how they saw themselves.
It wasn't the giants in the land that kept them out of God's promises. It was the grasshopper in their heads. Even though God said, "You can," they said, "We can't," so they didn't. A whole generation died in the wilderness because they were living by an old identity that didn't match their current reality.
You are not a grasshopper. You are a son or daughter of the Most High God. You are a child of the King. God lives inside you. He has ransomed and redeemed you. He has called and chosen you. He has anointed and appointed you for such a time as this.
This is a time to have a Caleb spirit, an attitude of faith that says, "We can certainly do this because God is with us." This is not arrogance, pride, or hubris. This is a true understanding of what God has deposited within you.
"Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, 'We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.'" (Numbers 13:30 NIV)
Don't be like the Israelites who missed out on their inheritance and wandered in the wilderness for forty years. It wasn't that God didn't want to bring them in. It was simply because their identity was so diminished by slavery that they were afraid to take hold of what God was making available. (Photo via SnappyGoat)
The Israelites allowed the wounds of their history to derail them from their divine destiny. That is not going to happen to you. You are a new creation in Christ. You are a blood-bought son or daughter of the Sovereign King. You lack no good thing in Christ (Psalm 34:10). You have been equipped with everything you need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). You are more than a conqueror in Christ (Romans 8:37). You can do all things through Christ, who gives you strength (Philippians 4:13). If God is for you, who can be against you? (Romans 8:31).
Put the Old Mindsets Behind You, and Step Forward in Faith
Ask the Lord to break off small thinking and shrunken living so that you may occupy every place, position, role, and responsibility that He has purposed for you. Renounce any grasshopper mentality. Reject inadequacy and inferiority. Believe God's good promises. Step forward in courage and faith into everything He is placing before you in this significant season. This is a time for an upgrade in your identity.
"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will—to the praise of His glorious grace, which He has freely given us in the One He loves. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace." (Ephesians 1:3–7 NIV)
