Demontae Edmonds: Leadership Blocks from the Life of Joseph

Demontae Edmonds, Atlanta, Georgia

The Progressive Manner to Leadership

Leadership is progressive. No one starts at the "top," nor should anyone desire to start there; it would be unwise and, frankly, foolish. God entrusts leadership to individuals in a progressive manner. Each level of stewardship in the leadership journey instills building blocks of wisdom, character, experience, and maturity to prepare a person to be effective at the next level.

The Story of Joseph

A study of Joseph's life reveals that he was first entrusted as a faithful steward and household manager over Potiphar's affairs. God started him there before making him prime minister (or "vice president") of Egypt. As Luke 16:12 says, "And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own?" (KJV).

Joseph was later made a supervisor within the Egyptian prison—what we might call today the "chief trustee." This role may have looked like a demotion, but it was here that one of the greatest lessons of leadership was learned: how to work with difficult and diverse personalities. This was the finishing touch before God could entrust him with the role He truly had in mind—chief operating officer of Egypt, the most powerful nation of that era.

God progressed Joseph through different levels of leadership. In each stage, Joseph discovered more of his strengths, overcame more weaknesses, and gained greater confidence in both himself and God. In today's world, people have started in the mailroom and—through diligence, faithfulness, hard work, and wisdom—made their way into the corporate boardroom. You can do it, too. Let patience, God's leading, and wisdom guide you forward. (Photo via Pexels)

Leadership Lessons

Here are some leadership lessons:

• Never try to start at the top or manipulate/brown-nose your way into a place of influence out of season, out of time, or out of God's will. It almost always backfires.

• Don't let the challenges of your current season consume you. Instead, ask God what leadership lessons He wants you to learn where you are now.

• Despise not small beginnings (Zechariah 4:10).

• Learn and grow. Let each season's building blocks expand your capacity and confidence for greater influence and authority in your leadership journey.

• Guard the lessons you learn during critical seasons and transitions. Treasure these rubies of wisdom. "For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it" (Proverbs 8:11 KJV).

Prayer

Lord, raise up leaders like Joseph who walk in integrity, humility, and unwavering faith. Teach them to serve faithfully in every season, whether in hidden places or positions of influence. Give them wisdom to navigate challenges and favor to stand before kings. Strengthen their character so that promotion does not corrupt them but draws them closer to You. May their leadership always advance Your Kingdom and reflect Your glory. Amen.
