Kim Potter: How to Water a Weary Inheritance

Kim Potter, Dayton, Tennessee

Seek and He Will Answer

Early one morning, I was awakened by the sound of a text message on my phone. When I picked it up and looked at the message, I realized it was a Scripture sent by a friend. Little did my friend know that her timely text was the answer to the very thing I had been praying about all week.

For several nights I had been dreaming about our inheritance, and I had been praying and asking God to help me understand how to claim it. I often found myself asking, "God, if it's here and ready, show us how to take possession of it."

Throughout the Bible, whenever God promised His children something, He always provided them with a way to claim it. He would give them a plan or a road map to follow. I was seeking Him for that guidance, and I even prayed that if I couldn't hear the answer directly, He would send someone to assist me. Praise the Lord, He did just that!

Her text said, "God, gave me this Scripture..."

The Scripture is Psalm 68:9 (NKJV): "You, O God sent a plentiful rain, whereby You confirmed Your inheritance when it was weary."

How Can an Inheritance Be Weary?

At first I thought, "What? How can an inheritance be weary?" I realized quickly that I had to do some digging.

Then I looked up the Scripture in the Amplified Bible. It says, "You, O God, sent abroad plentiful rain; You confirmed Your inheritance when it was parched and weary." (Photo via Pexels)

Now I was getting somewhere! The inheritance is parched and dry. I began to understand where God was going with this.

There are two ways I know of in the Bible to water something. First, a Scripture in Ephesians talks about the "washing of the water by the word" (Ephesians 5:26 NET). Therefore, the Word of God is like water on whatever it is spoken over.

Rain Responds to Worship

God then took me back to a Scripture that He revealed several years ago about worship and its effect on rain. Zechariah 14:17 (NKJV) says, "And it shall be that whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, on them there will be no rain."

This Scripture is clear: worship brings rain.

Harvests need rain. Apparently, our inheritance needs rain as well.

Let's look again at Psalm 68:9 (NKJV): "You, O God sent a plentiful rain, whereby You confirmed Your inheritance when it was weary." The word "confirmed" means He established it, secured it, settled it, and restored it. When rain comes down on your inheritance from God, it is established, secured, settled, and restored if need be. Isn't that awesome news?

I don't know about you, but this excites me. I now know that I need to water the inheritance that God has shown me by speaking and declaring the Word of God over it. And... as I worship God for my inheritance, I know He will cause HIS rain to fall upon it, confirming it, establishing it, and bringing it forth into my hands.

Our God is faithful. When we seek Him, as I did for answers, He is pleased to provide them. He wants us to walk in the fullness of our inheritance even more than we do. He has laid out the plan; we only need to follow His plan.
