Dan McCollam: Find the Deep Place in the Prophetic

What Does It Mean to Go Deep in the Prophetic Gift?

In my travels and online training, I meet hungry learners in various places in their prophetic journeys. Some are just beginning to discover the power of recognizing and responding to the voice of the Lord through the gift of prophecy, while others have been in prophetic streams most of their lives. But a question I hear from folks of all levels of experience is "What does it mean to go deep in your prophetic gift?"

The answer might surprise you.

The greatest and deepest experience of prophecy is the revelation of the person of Jesus Christ!

It All Points to Jesus

This conclusion is consistent within both the Old and New Testaments. The vast majority of prophetic words, prophetic types, and prophetic symbols in the Old Testament were pointing to the coming Messiah, our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus fulfilled more than 324 individual Old Testament prophecies, including forty-eight specific Messianic prophecies. While it's true that before the scriptural record was complete the prophetic in the Old Covenant was, at times, used to correct and rebuke, the primary focus was still to reveal the coming mission and person of Jesus Christ, the Messiah.

Then, with the compiling of the New Testament came the completion of Scripture. Many look at the New Testament as a moral guidebook, but it is much more than that. It is nothing short of the revelation of Jesus Christ, and the New Testament is concluded with what many people would consider to be the most prophetic book of the Bible: the Book of Revelation.

Consider the full title of Apostle John's written vision: The Revelation of Jesus Christ. This book's primary purpose is not to predict future or historical events in symbols and metaphors, but to reveal the person of Jesus. Bible scholars have identified ninety descriptions of Jesus in the Book of Revelation's twenty-two chapters. The deepest place in prophecy clearly reveals the person of Jesus. (Photo via Flickr)

Unity in the Faith

Now let's talk about maturity as it relates to depth in the prophetic. Ephesians 4 puts an interesting finishing line on the equipping of the saints in the gift of prophecy. It says, "[U]ntil we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ" (Ephesians 4:13).

Prophetic maturity is marked by unity in the faith and a deeper knowledge of the Son of God. Faith in the revelation of Jesus leads us to a state befitting the fullness and maturity that belongs to Jesus and keeps us from being tossed back and forth by waves of doctrine and polarized public opinion.

Prophetic maturity is marked by how clearly we see Him. The knowledge of Him is the master key in the Kingdom of God that unlocks glory, fullness, and maturity. Those who want to grow in the prophetic should set their sights upon the knowledge of Him who sits on the throne.

Who or What Do You Want to Be for Me Right Now?

In my own prophetic journey, there was a ten-year season when Graham Cooke, a seasoned prophet originally from Manchester, England, was the senior prophet at my local church. He taught us that one of the greatest questions you can ask God is "Lord, who or what do You want to be for me right now?"

I didn't realize at the time that this most reputable prophet was revealing the pathway to deep prophetic places. This simple question has the potential to keep you in the freshest revelation of Jesus. You can ask it over yourself, your loved ones, your church, your business, your city, and even your nation.

As you seek to grow deep in your prophetic gifting, fix your eyes on Jesus. Share with others who God wants to be for them in this season; share who Jesus is in them in this season and how He is prophetically revealed through them to others. Make it your personal goal to know Him in new ways daily, and then welcome to the deepest place in the prophetic.
