Living Water
I love that Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as "living water" (John 7:38); not stagnate pools or puddles from the last rain storm, but living, moving, fresh water to bring refreshment, cleansing, and a quenching of every thirst.
In the new Jerusalem, the river of life flows from the heart of the city. The river comes from underneath the altar of the temple and flows towards the Dead Sea, healing the lifeless waters (Ezekiel 47).
There's a fascinating picture of this in the current city of Jerusalem. The Gihon Spring flows from the City of Zion, which is where the first city was built. Mentioned as one of the four springs that come from Eden, this spring flows from the rocky mountain and brings the clearest, purest water even thousands of years after David's time. Even more fascinating, they have discovered Melchizedek's altar from the time of Abraham, which was built by this stream. No wonder King David sent his son Solomon to be anointed at this stream. It was the coronation site, next to the site of the first priestly temple to Yahweh.
I've visited this stream and the pools that are filled by it. It was here that Jesus sent the blind man to wash, and he came back seeing. It was probably here, at the Pool of Siloam, that Jesus cried, "If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink. He that believeth on Me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water" (John 7:37–38).
The Hebrews taught that your "belly" was where you spirit resided, or, as we could say today, your "gut." If you get a "gut feeling," it may be your spirit trying to tell you something! It's this part of our being that connects with Holy Spirit, gets filled, and runs over with living water! (Photo via Unsplash)
Welcome the Spirit
As we pray the following, we welcome the Holy Spirit in and invite Him to flow as living water!
Lord, we welcome Your streams of living water
To flow in this place.
Please enable us to drink
Of the living waters that spring up
Unto everlasting life!
Refresh those who are weary.
Strengthen those who are weak.
Meet the seekers with Your truth.
Bind up the brokenhearted with Your love.
Repair the breach,
And restore all that has been stolen.
We pray that you would bring sight to blind eyes,
Hearing to deaf ears,
And open prison doors to those who are bound.
We ask You to release dreams and visions,
Supernatural knowledge,
And wisdom.
We ask the Father to send angels
To break off trauma
And release healing.
We invite the host of Heaven to our land.
We welcome the pilgrims.
We pray they find shelter and rest
In the arms of the Savior.
(Prayer taken from my book, Brave Prayers.)
As we pray, He comes; lives are changed and hearts are touched. It's a gift we can all receive.
May you cry out for the living waters! We need more, Lord! Come Holy Spirit and refresh all those who are thirsty. Fill us up to overflowing, so we can overflow with Your love.
