Daniel Pontious: "Why Am I Encountering Turbulence?"

Daniel Pontious, Sonora, CA

A Flight to Remember

I can remember back a couple of years ago, while my wife and I were visiting her parents in Texas, we had to fly in and out of Houston airport. I had flown many times in the past, but usually the weather was perfect each time, so I never knew what it was like to experience turbulence. I have heard from others who have had the experience firsthand, but I had never dealt with it myself before.

Needless to say, we got on the plane, and the plane circled the runway for over twenty minutes because the wind kept changing directions and the pilot couldn't take off. By the time twenty minutes had gone by, they had at least eight planes circling the same runway. Finally, after wasting half of the plane's fuel on the ground going in circles, I think the pilot was so frustrated that he just decided to punch his way through, regardless. So we took off, and the turbulence was incredible! It shook the whole plane like a kite adrift in the wind.

When the Winds Change

I share this story because, like that plane, many of us feel like we are wanting to take off into what God has called us to do, but we are encountering opposition from the prince of the power of the air.

Maybe you feel like the wind just keeps changing directions on you, or the circumstances of your situation keep changing. You wonder if you'll ever get off the ground, and when you finally do, you begin to experience "turbulence"—opposition to what you're attempting.

Ride the Currents

It's often during these times that the Holy Spirit wants you to press in closer to Him and ride the currents. As we wait upon Him, He will cause us to mount up on wings like the eagle. (Photo via Piqsels)

"But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up [close to God] as eagles [mount up to the sun]; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint or become tired." (Isaiah 40:31, AMPC)

An eagle doesn't fight the air currents or the circumstances that are surrounding the situation, but it learns to use them to obtain an even higher elevation in the atmosphere. The things that would impede them normally in flight become a booster to take them to a higher place than they've ever been before.

Let Him Take You Higher!

Once my plane was above the turbulent area, it was smooth sailing all the way home; we never had another problem. Sometimes God will cause us to go through a situation to achieve a higher place. Even though He isn't the author of the situation, He will cause us to rise above it. We must understand that He wants to take us through it, not have us remain in it. It is a temporary situation, not a permanent place of residency.

Be prepared for the ride of your life as you obtain the altitude He has for you. When you achieve it, your perspective will change!
