Kelsey O'Malley: "Treasuring Him in Our Hearts"

Kelsey O'Malley, Raleigh, North Carolina

As Mother's Day is here, I wanted to share a Scripture that has touched my heart.

Have you ever thought about all that Mary (the mother of Jesus) saw, heard, and felt during her encounters with angels and the supernatural? She was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit and lived in a home with Jesus, raised Him, and got to hear all He had to say. She was favored and got to experience many things that were heavenly.

I love how you can see her nature on the pages of the Bible. When the shepherds were recounting how the choir of angels appeared singing to them, and how the angel of the Lord appeared and told them to go and find the baby wrapped in strips of cloth, everyone was astonished! "But Mary treasured all these things in her heart and often pondered what they meant" (Luke 2:19 TPT).

"Lost" and "Found"

Another time, when Jesus was older, His parents were returning home with an entourage only to discover that Jesus was not with them! Mary must have been scared and shocked, frantically looking for Him, as many mothers would do! After being separated three days, she was clearly upset (as any mother would be) because her child was not where He was supposed to be (in her eyes).

As soon as they found Him in the Temple, Jesus asked them, "...Why would you need to search for Me? Didn't you know that it was necessary for Me to be here in My Father's house, consumed with Him?" (Luke 2:49 TPT). Even though Mary didn't fully understand this, the Bible says she "treasured" His words in her heart.

Luke 2:41–51 (TPT): "Every year Jesus' parents went to worship at Jerusalem during the Passover festival. When Jesus turned twelve, His parents took Him to Jerusalem to observe the Passover, as was their custom. A full day after they began their journey home, Joseph and Mary realized that Jesus was missing. They had assumed He was somewhere in their entourage, but He was nowhere to be found. After a frantic search among relatives and friends, Mary and Joseph returned to Jerusalem to search for Him.

"After being separated from Him for three days, they finally found Him in the temple, sitting among the Jewish teachers, listening to them and asking probing questions. All who heard Jesus speak were awestruck at His intelligent understanding of all that was being discussed and at His wise answers to their questions. (Photo via Picryl)

"His parents were shocked to find Him there, and Mary scolded Him, saying, 'Son, Your father and I have searched for You everywhere! We have been worried sick over not finding You. Why would You do this to us?'

"Jesus said to them, 'Why would you need to search for Me? Didn't you know that it was necessary for Me to be here in My Father's house, consumed with Him?'

"Mary and Joseph didn't fully understand what Jesus meant. Jesus went back home with them to Nazareth and was obedient to them. His mother treasured Jesus' words deeply in her heart."

Treasuring Him in Our Hearts

I know I treasure things in my heart. I treasure Jesus' words just like Mary did. I treasure events the Lord allows me to be part of. I treasure biblical accounts of the glory of God, and supernatural encounters that I have had swirl around in my mind, and my thoughts are consumed with all they mean.

I find that these precious things keep our thoughts focused on Jesus. They are precious treasures we keep in our hearts that make us humble and quiet in spirit; they make us gentle, remembering the power, might, and strength of God. As children of God, we keep things inside of us that no one can take away, special things that are so pure and lovely.

So, today, what things are being brought up inside of you as your treasures? Ponder them and remind yourself of the goodness of God, the mysteries of God revealed through Jesus, and think upon all those lovely things; for this is the day the Lord has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
