"The Purpose of
Submissive Dependence"
-Wade E. Taylor

Wade Taylor Ministries

"Who is this that comes up from the wilderness, leaning upon her Beloved? . . . " -Song of Solomon 8:5

There is a particular quality about this "one" who is coming up from the wilderness that attracts special attention. She is "leaning" upon her Beloved. This position of leaning demonstrates the fact that she has become completely "dependent" upon Him. Something has taken place within her during this experience of the wilderness, resulting in her becoming "submissively dependent" upon the Lord.

Throughout Biblical history, the Lord often used the wilderness to test His servants in order to perfect His purposes within them. The wilderness speaks of a barren and desolate area. It is a place where inner needs become intensified in their desire to receive satisfaction but where there is no availability of the things that are necessary to meet those needs or to satisfy those desires. In the wilderness, needs can only be met through an external source.

In contrast to this barren wilderness, the Lord had planted a garden in Eden, supplying everything that could be desired. It provided an environment of both beauty and provision--complete beyond imagination.

"And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil." -Genesis 2:8-9

Adam and Eve were placed in this garden and commanded:

"Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat thereof you shall surely die." -Genesis 2:16b-17

This made them dependent, as they were required to obey the word that the Lord had spoken to them. There were two specific things that were required:

1. Adam and Eve were to eat of the tree of Life in order to maintain eternal life (Genesis 3:22).

2. They were to abstain from eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Through their act of disobedience, they forfeited their position of "willing dependence" upon the Lord.

The only restraint to their eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was the "word" that the Lord had spoken to them, telling them that they were not to partake. This tree was in the midst of the garden. It was very desirable and easily available to them. Eve had observed that the fruit of this tree was good for food, pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired (Genesis 3:6). Herein was Eve's problem: the fruit of this tree was very appealing. However, she knew that God had said "no."

Therefore, when Satan approached Eve, he came against the Word that the Lord had spoken by raising doubt: "Has God said. . . ?" In effect, he was saying, "Would God tell you to give up something that is really good, something that you like and want?" Even though the Lord had said, "You shalt not eat," the attraction was so enticing, and the fruit seemingly so desirable, that Eve disobeyed and partook.

Through this act of disobedience, Adam and Eve forfeited their position of "willing dependence" upon the Lord. They failed to "overcome" their fleshly desire in the test that had been placed in their pattern of life and became spiritually separated from God. As a result of this, the process of death entered their being, and they no longer "leaned" upon Him. Along with this, they lost all that would have developed on their behalf had they been obedient and had they overcome in this testing.

An overcomer is one who submits to the Lord. . .

The Word of God is silent concerning what might have taken place in their relationship to the Lord had they chosen to remain submissive and obedient to Him. The only clue that we have as to what might have been is to consider the outcome in the testing of the "Last Adam." Jesus took upon Himself, in human form, the identity of a new Adam and then faced a test that was similar to the one that the first Adam had faced.

"And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterward hungry. And when the tempter came to Him, he said, 'If You be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.' But He answered and said, 'It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'" -Matthew 4:2-4

Jesus, as the Last Adam, overcame in every situation where the first Adam failed. As a result of this, after paying the penalty for our sin on the cross, He was resurrected and then ascended to sit with His Father on His throne.

"Even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His Throne." -Revelation 3:21b

An overcomer is one who submits to the Lord and then abides in a leaning position upon his Beloved. This is an indication of their complete trust in and dependence upon the Lord. It is the result of having become obedient and submissive to the will of the Lord. Being an overcomer means rising above all that is less than the Lord's revealed or known best. It involves our facing the test of the wilderness and remaining dependent upon the Lord for provision.

Adam and Eve were tested concerning the possibility of their becoming overcomers. Because of the desirability and the attraction of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they chose for their own seeming good and failed to overcome.

All spiritual gain must be tested if it is to abide and become productive. Adam and Eve failed their test while abiding in a perfect environment, and they entered death as a result. Jesus, as the Last Adam, had to face a similar test in order to qualify for the place in life that the first Adam had forfeited.

Dependency Upon the Father for Our Needs

In contrast to the perfect environment of the Garden of Eden, Jesus faced Satan in the barren environment of a wilderness that provided nothing.

"And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterward hungry." -Matthew 4:2

There was nothing available that could satisfy the intense hunger that Jesus felt. Then, Satan appeared to Jesus and suggested that He turn stones into bread in order to satisfy this gnawing hunger.

There was nothing inherently wrong with turning these stones into bread, except that God had not said to do so. Jesus refused to act on a word from Satan and waited for supply from His Father. Had Jesus exercised His Deity in order to provide for His own need, He would have become independent. He qualified by remaining in a place of total dependence upon His Father for provision.

This was exactly where Adam and Eve failed, for Satan had said to them:

"For God does know that in the day you eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." - Genesis 3:5

Satan told Adam and Eve that they could be independent from God and do as they felt best. They could decide for themselves what was right or wrong. Now, Satan was telling Jesus that He could act on His own to provide for Himself, just as he had told Eve to do.

Jesus confirmed His complete dependence upon God when He said:

"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God." -Matthew 4:4

He refused to act apart from a Word from the Lord, and He came forth from the wilderness in the "power of the Spirit" (Luke 4:14).

Be Patient During Your Times of Being Tested. . .

As a result of His willing obedience by which He remained dependent upon His Father, He is qualified to say to us:

"To him that overcomes will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne." -Revelation 3:21

We also will be tested, as Jesus was, "if" we desire to come into this relationship of "submissive dependence" upon Jesus. Those who choose to abide in this position of "leaning upon Him" will then be led by the Holy Spirit into a specially prepared wilderness, (a place of spiritual barrenness) where we will develop a deep inner hunger (dissatisfaction), along with an intense desire (frustration), in some area of our being.

Then at a critical moment--when it apparently seems to us that the Lord is no longer interested in our problem and that He is delaying His answer--the enemy will be "allowed" to come and tempt us. He will try to provoke us to act in some way to produce, or to bring about, the satisfaction that we desperately long for--which is presently apart from the Lord's provision for us. If we will steadfastly refuse this temptation and stand fast, in due time, the Lord will feed (satisfy) us.

"But He knows the way that I take: when He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold." -Job 23:10

If we will be patient during our times of being tested and "wait" for the Lord's provision for us, then it can truly be said:

". . . Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love Him." -1 Corinthians 2:9

The first Adam failed and lost his place or position as an overcomer. This was regained by Jesus, who overcame as the Last Adam. He was faithful in maintaining His place of dependence. As a result, He is seated with His Father on His Throne. Now, Jesus is offering to all who overcome, a place with Him on His Throne. These overcomers are the ones who were seen coming up from the wilderness, "leaning upon their Beloved."

There is no greater joy than that which comes from making a determined choice to become dependent upon Him and then to faithfully abide in this newfound place of "submissive dependence," until the greater day comes.

"Visitations: The Epic of God's Heart"
by Jill Austin with Heidi Baker & Ana Mendez-Ferrell

The Epic of God's Heart is the first of a unique series of recordings presented by Jill Austin featuring men and women describing their heavenly encounters. In this first volume, Jill Austin, Ana Mendez-Ferrell, and Heidi Baker each recount in detail visitations they personally experienced. These visitations or "open visions" are not faint impressions or imaginative mental pictures. Rather, they are real encounters with the living Son of God not unlike that of Paul the Apostle - "...whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows - [I] was caught up to the third heaven" (2 Cor. 2:12).

The Epic of God's Heart is presented as a 2-disc set. The first CD is Jill Austin, Heidi Baker, and Ana Mendez-Ferrell describing their personal, radical encounters with Christ in the first person cut to cutting-edge, God-inspired music. The second CD is the actual instrumental tracks by themselves used as a tool for your own times of secret-place prayer, intercession, and visitation.

This CD, the latest in Todd Bentley's soaking series, is sure to take you into the glory and presence of God. Todd says he believes this is his best and most anointed CD project so far. In this recording you will hear Todd speaking powerful soaking prayers over inspiring instrumental sounds and sweet female vocals. Titles of some of the tracks include: 'Waiting on the Lord,' 'Intimacy, Fruitfulness & Anointing,' 'Drinking by Faith' and 'Marinating.' This CD is recorded for those who want to be saturated with the presence of the Holy Spirit and whose hearts long for deep intimacy with Jesus.

While recording this CD in Kelowna British Columbia, Todd experienced visions and visitations of the Supernatural Realms of Heaven.

Todd, his father Dave Bentley, as well as others present in the recording studio felt the tangible presence and anointing of the Lord in a new and exciting way. The tangible presence and anointing is transferable and is definitely captured on this very special recording.

God has placed an awesome anointing upon Todd's life. I believe he is a forerunner of a new breed that God is now raising up - part of a breed of believers with great grace and anointing." - Bobby Conner, Founder of Demonstration of God's Power Ministries

"I love Todd Bentley's ministry and everything about it. Rarely have I seen such a gift of faith in operation almost all the time. His faith is so contagious. When you're under Todd's ministry, you feel like you can go anywhere and do anything. No problem or obstacle is too big. He's so inclusive. He wants everyone to go with him all the time. To me, that's how Jesus would be." - Stacey Campbell, cofounder of New Life Church, Praying the Bible International and Revival Now Ministries

"Todd Bentley is a prophetic sign post of how in this end time hour, God is supernaturally raising up men and women who will literally change the course of history. Todd is not only a sovereign vessel, but he lives in a sovereign time. The supernatural grace and the amazing acceleration that mark his life are not only available to him, but also to you - if only you will grab hold of all that God desires to give you! - Jill Austin, Founder, Master Potter Ministries, Author of Master Potter and Master Potter and the Mountain of Fire

"I've known Todd for a number of years and he is the most radical, faith-filled young man I've known in the whole wide world. He's just out there going for it. He's true blue to the Word, the Spirit of God and to the body of Christ. I'm excited about Todd and Fresh Fire and about their global outreach to mobilize the body of Christ. I encourage you to stand with this ministry and be partners in the harvest." - Patricia King, Extreme Prophetic Television, cofounder of the War Room and Christian Services Association;

Todd Bentley, his wife, Shonnah and their three children, Lauralee, Esther and Elijah reside in Abbotsford, BC, Canada. In his late teens, Todd had a dramatic encounter with the saving power of God. This experience brought Todd out of a lifestyle of drug and alcohol addiction without cravings or withdrawal symptoms. Todd's miraculous conversion to Jesus was much like the Apostle Paul's on the Damascus road.

The passion of Todd's life and ministry is to see others set free through the anointing of the Holy Spirit and to see them come to the reality of an intimate relationship with Jesus. He also desires to see Christ's body healed, equipped and rising up in the power of the Holy Spirit to fulfill the great commission. Todd ministers prophetically, corporately and personally. God has released an increase of the healing anointing into Todd's life to the point where the blind can see and the deaf can hear. Jesus still heals every sickness and every disease.

"Transported by the Lion of Judah"

by Anne Elmer

Book or Audio Book (2 Audio CDs)

The Apostle Paul was caught up and shown things so spectacular, he wasn't even allowed to tell some of them. Phillip was transported in the Spirit from the baptism of the Ethiopian Eunuch to another city. John the Revelator was told to "come up here" so that God could show him things to come.

And still today, hundreds, if not thousands, of God's people are continuing to have "caught up" experiences where God shows them marvelous revelation for the Church. Anne Elmer never saw it coming. But before she knew it, the Lord was transporting her all over the earth, in multiple experiences, to see God's people from many different groups, and in many countries - but no longer from her perspective.

Further Comments about this amazing first book, published by ELIJAH LIST PUBLICATIONS, by Steve Shultz:

Paul, the Apostle, was "caught up" into a "transported" experience, as was John the Revelator, probably more than once.

One time, Jesus tells John, "Come up here!" Another time, Paul speaks about being caught up to the third heaven, "whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell" (2 Cor 12:2). Paul had no idea if this experience was of him being taken OUT of his body or simply taken IN his Body, to another place.

Nevertheless, one way or another these men were CAUGHT UP and shown wondrous things, some of which they were allowed to tell others about. This is happening to people all over the earth today.

You are being offered the opportunity to read about another such account by a good friend of mine, Anne Elmer, currently living with her husband in France, but raised in the U.K.

Experience first hand through this riveting account, this amazing narrative as Jesus, who came to Anne in the form of "The Lion of Judah," entirely changes her life and church perspective.

Jesus transported Anne, a lonely hospital-bound woman, over and over again -- from her place of infirmity into one "trip" after another to finally see the Church. He showed her, through the eyes of Jesus, "The Lion of Judah" Himself, many soon-to-be Believers outside the Church, as well as many Believers she may have otherwise judged harshly.

Prepare to have your view of "The Church" changed forever, and I mean it! This is the first story and experience ever to be published by THE ELIJAH LIST in hard copy. Trust me when I say that you will not want to miss reading this.

"Why?" you may ask.

Let me ask you a few questions:

Do you ever suffer from judging people and then wish you knew how not to judge so harshly? Then this book is for you.

Do you ever wonder if even one of your prayers are heard when you intercede over an ungodly building or geographical area? Then this book is for you.

Do you ever wish you understood more about how God looks at Believers or even UN-believers who are in a dry place spiritually, while wanting to be in a better place? Then this book is for you.

The cost is just $8. But the life-changing, paradigm-shifting stories are priceless!
