Prophetic voices testify that the Spirit of God is saying that
significant changes are near in the heavens and on the earth. That means that
the Feast of Tabernacles, which is being celebrated these days, is unlike any
other.
The three Fall Feasts of the Lord -- Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and Tabernacles
-- prophesy about the apocalyptic travail as end-time cycles of alarm and
purging lead to conviction and repentance, resulting in progressive harvest. The
Trumpets were blown two weeks ago, the Day of Atonement was observed last week,
and Tabernacles is already upon us. What does this Feast of Tabernacles tell the
prophetic Church today?
A Full Harvest
Tabernacles speaks of the great harvest at the end of the age. It is the
longest, most joyful, and elaborate feast of all the seven Feasts of the Lord,
and [it] is perceived in both Messianic and Rabbinical circles to carry
international ramifications. The seventy bulls to be sacrificed throughout the
seven days of the Feast are prophetic intercession for the symbolic seventy
Gentile nations of the world, while Zechariah's prophecy in Zechariah 14:16-19
places Tabernacles at the heart of the Lord's future rule over the nations.
Tabernacles is the seventh Feast, celebrated in the heart of the seventh month
of the biblical year, and is observed for seven magnificent days with a special
solemn assembly on the eighth day. Its entire message speaks of the perfect
completion of God's prophetic promises as He sums up all things in Christ.
According to Numbers 29:12-39, vast numbers of sacrifices were to be offered
throughout the days of the Feast. The Israelites, in addition to the ongoing
meal and drink offerings, sacrificed to the Lord seventy young bullocks,
fourteen rams, ninety-eight lambs, and seven goats -- all derivatives of the
number seven!
Are we able to hear God's voice and prepare our hearts and our wineskins for the
harvest that is coming? Will we be able to contain and sustain the riches of His
glory this time? Or will we merely spawn another "movement" that will soon
harden and persecute the next move of God? The dove is looking for a resting
place, and God is looking to Tabernacle with His people.
"And I heard a loud voice from the
throne, saying, 'Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He shall dwell
among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be among them,
and He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be
any death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first
things have passed away.'" -- Revelation 21:3
A perfect God is preparing a great celebration for a harvest
perfected in the obedience of faith and the atoning blood of His only begotten
Son; we must be ready.
The Temporary Booth
For seven days, Israel was commanded to dwell in temporary, lightly-constructed
booths to commemorate God's deliverance and provisions. The covering of the
booth, according to Scripture, was to be made of
"foliage of beautiful trees, palm branches, and boughs of leafy trees and
willows of the brook. . . " -- Leviticus 23:40. All Israel was
celebrating the final phase of God's prophetic cycle dining, as families, in
these beautifully decorated and ornate huts. What prophetic perspective do these
booths provide for the Church today?
Simplicity & Joy
Though the booths are constructed within sight of spacious homes filled with the
possessions of this world, the harvest celebration is typified by great
simplicity. It is contained in a rudimentary and flimsy hut, with a small space
allowing for only one table around which the family dines and worships.
The Spirit is saying that the coming waves of God's activity and the consequent
harvest of souls will be once again realized and celebrated in family circles.
The big public celebrations, as in the Temple, will always have their place, but
the essence of Tabernacles is in the homes as families and households worship
and serve the Lord together.
Sitting in those humble booths, we realize that our large homes and countless
possessions don't really matter that much and are not as essential. In the
little booth, we discover our true happiness: our relationship with God and with
each other. The stuff that fills our homes never made anybody happier and is not
what defines us as human beings created in God's image.
"And He said to them, 'Beware, and be on your guard
against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his
life consist of his possessions.'" -- Luke 12:15
In fact, the temporary rush we feel when we add another toy or possession to our
overflowing material collection is quickly spent. And like any other drug, it is
soon replaced with a greater emptiness and the drive to acquire more and more.
The world will never satisfy the hunger of our soul. In the booth, we come to
realize that true fulfillment and happiness come not from what we have, but from
who we are before man and before God.
Water & Spirit
Possibly the most elaborate Feast, Tabernacles incorporated profound daily water
ceremonies involving all of Israel's priests from all 24 divisions. While
hundreds of priests were receiving the sacrifices brought into the Temple courts
by the pilgrims, hundreds of other priests were waving willow branches freshly
cut outside the city walls, and the rest of the priesthood, led by the High
Priest, participated in the water ceremony.
A procession of Priests marched daily from the Temple to the spring of Siloam
(where Jesus healed the blind man), and [they] drew water in a golden pitcher.
Returning to the Temple in a great procession with hundreds of priests
worshiping and waving the willow branches in the wind, the water, together with
ceremonial wine, was poured upon the altar of the Lord as a drink offering. The
Feast centered on the expression of water and sacrifices as a daily prophetic
display which was intensifying from day to day until the eighth and last day of
the Feast.
"Now on the last day, the great
day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, 'If any man is thirsty, let
him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, "From
his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water."' But this He spoke of
the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was
not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified." -- John 7:37-39
Can you see this? The Lord Jesus, being led by the Spirit,
took His stand in the Temple at the height of the Feast and said, "Come to
Me!" Pointing to Himself, He proclaimed that He is the fulfillment of the
Feast! He is the ultimate sacrifice who forever lives to make intercession, the
Lord of the harvest, and the only source of eternal life. All of our sacrifices,
our libations, our meal offerings, our booths, the water and the wine -- they
all speak of HIM. "If you believe in me," Jesus promised, from your innermost
being, from the hidden true person inside, "shall flow rivers of living water."
Most of us still struggle with the reality of our innermost being, the real
person deep inside who must be born again in childlike innocence and purity
before God's Spirit can freely flow from us. There is a great need for many to
come to Him to a greater degree than before, receive completeness and wholeness
-- His SHALOM -- and be healed by His love before we can become a flowing
river of His Spirit. We need to be emptied and then refilled.
Repentance & the Light of the World
Tabernacles was also a Feast of light. Four enormous candelabras were erected in
the Temple courts, each fed by four vats of fresh olive oil burning thick wicks
made of rolled-up priestly garments. Their light, tradition tells us, lit up
every courtyard and home in Jerusalem during the Feast days.
The day following His proclamation in the Temple court, Jesus was confronted by
an angry mob wanting Him to join them in condemning and stoning the woman caught
in adultery. Rescuing her from the sentence of death and commissioning her to go
on in life and sin no more, the Lord turned to those around Him still in the
Temple courts and said, "I am the light of the
world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the
light of life." -- John 8:12
That woman, having walked in darkness, was now given an opportunity to choose
light and life. She was a first fruit, and the harvest that is coming in our
generation will also have to pass through the valley of decision and make their
choice. Caught "in the act," exposed, and facing certain death, the woman's
demise became her deliverance as she encountered the Lord of Life and humbled
her heart before Him.
This is a sign of the coming harvest as many, in similar and desperate
conditions, will be pursued and driven to the end of their rope and find
themselves meeting Jesus face to face as He lives in His redeemed people. Some
will be harvested; others will be trodden down.
"Put in the sickle, for the
harvest is ripe. Come, tread, for the wine press is full; the vats overflow, for
their wickedness is great. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For
the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision." -- Joel
3:13-14
This is when and where the Lord is near, and this is where the
prophetic Church needs to join the "Lord of the Harvest" in His labors.
Our Flesh & the Word
With roofs made of loose branches, the booths are open to the heavens,
vulnerable to the elements, and allow the breeze and the shining stars to grace
the worshippers. However, all who actually spend time in these festive little
huts know full well that after the third or fourth day the green foliage starts
to dry and slowly die. In fact, the drier the foliage, the more light and wind
come through.
Marveling at the beauty of the autumn colors while visiting a botanical garden
recently, we actually stood for a few moments under a "rain" of colorful leaves
as the balmy breeze blew them from the branches and carried them softly to the
ground. It was a most colorful and beautiful rain of living shapes and scents,
and the words of the prophet Isaiah came to mind, saying:
"A voice says, 'Call out.' Then he
answered, 'What shall I call out?' All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is
like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the
breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass
withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever."
-- Isaiah 40:6-8
The booth, as is our flesh, is but a temporary and flimsy
tent. Our glory is for a moment, and it soon fades. The real life of the spirit
is within, hidden beneath the earthly veils, and it goes on long after the tent
collapses.
The scripture tells us that all flesh and all its loveliness is fleeting.
Educated or simple flesh, pretty or ugly flesh, rich or poor flesh -- all flesh
(like the leafy coverings of the Tabernacle) will wither and fade when the
Spirit of the Lord blows upon it.
However, in contrast to our temporary tent, the prophetic word assures us that
"the word of our God stands forever." In other words, the earthly elements of
our existence are bound to die off, and only those things that are reborn and
renewed by the word of our God will go on to eternity. The spiritual life inside
the humble hut is what Tabernacles speaks of. The booth is temporary, but the
life is eternal.
"For we know that if the earthly
tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not
made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For indeed in this house we groan,
longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven… in order that what is
mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now He who prepared us for this very purpose
is God, who gave to us the Spirit as a pledge." -- 2 Corinthians
5:1-5
Teach Us to Number Our Days
As Israel and the Church cross the "finish line" of the seventh and final Feast
of this biblical year, the Spirit is calling us to lift our vision up higher.
The ultimate Tabernacles speaks of the fullness of the age (fullness of harvest,
spirit, and maturity), the coming of the Lord, the resurrection of the dead, and
life everlasting. Let us make every effort to be sure that our lives, homes, and
churches are ready for His coming.
"Now all these things are from
God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and gave us the ministry of
reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself,
not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word
of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were
entreating through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God."
-- 2 Corinthians 5:18-20

Hannah
Wills is a Jewish Believer who had a divine encounter with the God of Israel
while teaching in Woodstock, NY. In the 1990's she studied under internationally
known calligraphers, while a member of the Washington Calligrapher's Guild.
Hannah soon developed an increasing burden to cause HIS WORD to "come alive" in
the eyes and hearts of her readers.
In 1999, the Lord prepared the way for Hannah
and her husband to make "Aliyah" (Jewish people returning to their homeland) and
settle in Galilee. While studying Hebrew Calligraphy with a Torah Scribe in
Jerusalem, she founded "Beresheet," meaning "in the beginning" (the Hebrew name
for the book of Genesis). The company logo declares "in the beginning was the
WORD," the opening words of the book of John. Her desire is to magnify HIS WORD
by incorporating it into beautiful designs and bringing together the "old" and
the "new" with Scripture in both Hebrew and English.

Your People
Shall Be My People
By Don Finto
$11.99 Book
|
Controversy surrounds God's plan for Israel. Don Finto
presents a biblical and exciting perspective of God's heart toward the Holy
Land. In so doing, he gives us a valuable and inspiring resource for winning our
Jewish friends to Christ. - Francis Frangipane, Pastor, River of Life
Ministries, Cedar Rapids, Iowa |
|
"This is the best bridge-building book written on the
subject of Israel, the Jewish people and the Church! Go on a journey with my
friend Don Finto and learn how you, too, can receive God's heart for His
purposes among the Jewish people." - Jim W. Goll, Cofounder, Ministry to the
Nations, Author of
Exodus Cry and Kneeling on the Promises, Antioch, Tennessee |
|
Too
many Gentile believers think of Christianity as a replacement for Judaism - and
Israel as something apart from God's plan.
Don Finto's Your People Shall Be My People reveals God's purposes for His
covenant people in these times - and how this revelation is impacting the
Church.
Unlike Ruth in the Old Testament, many of us have turned our backs on the
relatives of the Messiah, and we share the collective guilt for centuries of
their persecution. Finto reminds us that confessing these sins is only a
beginning. More than ever, we mush embrace and intercede for the chosen people
of God, aligning our prayers with God's plan.
With Israel and her people once again center stage at a crucial moment in world
history, our prayers for them are vital. Will we make the same covenant pledge
to Israel that Ruth made to Naomi? If so, our Church will never be the same.
Don
Finto was Senior Pastor of Belmont Church in Nashville, Tennessee, for over 25
years. He is married to Martha Ann (Graves) Finto. They have three children and
seven grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Don received his formal
education from Abilene Christian University, University of Hamburg, Germany
(while serving for eight years there with the Churches of Christ), Harding
Graduate School in Memphis, Tennessee (MA) and Vanderbilt University (Ph.D.).
From 1963 to 1971 he was a faculty member of David Lipscomb University.
Since the late 60's when Don had a life changing spiritual experience, he has
been in the front line of renewal within the body of Christ. In the early 70's
Belmont was one of the churches in Nashville that actively related to the "Jesus
Movement" and those who were coming to the Lord through that Holy Spirit
outpouring and to the music being birthed in that awakening. Don is a passionate
advocate for godly unity in the body of the Lord across all denominational,
racial and other lines. He served as co-chair of the Pastors' Committee in the
June 2000 Billy Graham meetings in Nashville and continues to be involved in
efforts to unite the body of the Lord in his home city. In 1992 Don led the
Belmont Church to become a "cell-based" church, believing this would be the best
way to pastor a large church for the coming revival.
After handing over the leadership of the church to Stephen Mansfield in January
of 1997, Don has been active primarily in two areas: 1) pastoring pastors, and
2) supporting the rapidly emerging Messianic Jewish movement. Don believes the
return of the Messianic Jewish believers and congregations is the clear
fulfillment of prophecies both from the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament
and that this return connects prophetically to the larger world revival.
Don was one of the founders of Teen Challenge in Nashville, is an alumnus of
Leadership Nashville, has served as chairman of the National Board of March for
Jesus, is a member of the "Toward Jerusalem Council II," (a move to bridge the
ancient gap between Jews and Gentiles). He also serves on the governing council
of the Messianic Jewish Ministry Tikkun (Restoration), as well as serving on the
advisory board of a number of other ministries.
