Will Meier: Restoring Families Through the Altar of Christ

Establishing a Generational Priesthood in Your Family Line

When I married Donna, the Lord gave me a covenant promise over our marriage and our family line.

"'As for Me,' says the Lord, 'this is My covenant with them: My Spirit who is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your descendants, nor from the mouth of your descendants' descendants,' says the Lord, 'from this time and forevermore.'" (Isaiah 59:21 NKJV)

I received that promise by faith. I understood that God was speaking about His Spirit, His Word, and the generations who would come after us. Years later, I am still coming into the weight of what He spoke.

As I began praying for the restoration of the superior altar of Christ in my family and ministry, something happened almost immediately. One of my spiritual sons—someone deeply connected, committed, and invested in what God has entrusted to us—began receiving a remarkable flow of spiritual revelation. He was picking up a tremendous amount of prophetic content from the same spiritual stream, or portal, flowing through what God had established among us.

It was amazing to watch. This was more than the transfer of information. It was a transfer of spiritual revelation and inheritance. What God had established in one generation was already beginning to flow into another.

The promise was not simply that God would bless our marriage. It concerned a family line—His Spirit resting upon us, His Word established within us, and both continuing through our descendants and their descendants. That is not merely a blessing to admire. It is an architecture to build. God gives the promise. We must learn to build according to it.

What the Enemy Understood Before We Did

Our culture has steadily emptied the family of spiritual significance. Marriage has been weakened. Fathers and mothers have been dishonored. Children have been severed from their history and told to construct identity without roots, covering, or inheritance. That erosion was not accidental.

"The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy." (John 10:10 NKJV)

The enemy has fought the family with unusual intensity because he understands what a family carries. Destroy a marriage and you destabilize a household. Remove fathers and mothers and you create an identity vacuum. Divide parents from children and you interrupt the transfer of wisdom, testimony, blessing, and assignment. What most Believers miss is this: he is not only after your family. He is after your family line. He is after the generations that could inherit what God has entrusted to you.

Every Family Named

Open your New Testament to the first page. Before a single miracle, before the angel, and before the star there are seventeen verses of names. Most of us skip them. We treat them as throat-clearing before the story starts.

Read who is in that genealogy: Tamar, who conceived by pretending to be a prostitute; Rahab, who was one; Ruth, a Moabite from a nation forbidden to enter the assembly; and "her who had been the wife of Uriah" (Matthew 1:6 NKJV). Matthew will not even write Bathsheba's name without naming the man David murdered to get her.

Four women are listed, and every one was involved in a scandal. God did not scrub the record; He published it. The salvation of the world arrived through a messy family line, running fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

Your family line is not disqualified by its history. It is the road His purposes have always chosen to travel on. And Paul tells us why: "...from whom the whole family in Heaven and earth is named" (Ephesians 3:14–15 NKJV). Every family on earth is a derivative of something in Him. Your household is not a natural arrangement you are asking God to bless. It is a copy of an original—which is why it carries the weight it carries, why it transmits what it transmits, and why it has been attacked the way it has. (Photo via Pexels)

The Household Was the Unit

Throughout Scripture the pattern is consistent. Noah entered the ark with his household. The Passover lamb was selected according to the size of a house, and the blood was applied to the door frame that governed everyone inside. Rahab reached for the deliverance of her whole family. Joshua declared his faith for himself and his house.

None of these examples teaches salvation by proxy. Every person must respond to God. But the household was the recognized unit of spiritual responsibility, and someone was expected to stand for the rest.

Then comes the sober warning. After Joshua's generation was gathered to their fathers, "Another generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel" (Judges 2:10 NKJV). One generation. That is the entire distance between a parted river and total amnesia. Inheritance is never automatic. What is not deliberately handed over is lost in a single generation.

The Superior Altar and the Blood That Speaks

Every family is being formed around something. An altar is not a piece of furniture. An altar is the thing that governs—the pattern that repeats, the agreement formed under pain and never revisited, and the unspoken rule everyone in the house knows without being told.

Fear can govern a household. Anger can set its temperature. Addiction, control, rejection, mammon, performance, and unforgiveness can become repeated patterns that outlive the person who introduced them. What becomes normal is transmitted as inheritance unless someone names it and builds differently.

The question is not whether your family has a functional altar. The question is which altar is speaking. And the answer is not simply to identify an inferior altar and oppose it. Renunciation without replacement leaves the ground untended. We must bring the household into active agreement with the superior altar and finished work of Jesus Christ.

"We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat." (Hebrews 13:10 NKJV)

The cross is the final altar. Jesus is the sacrifice, the eternal High Priest, the Mediator of the new covenant, the King who governs that covenant. His blood was offered once for all and obtained eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:12). His priesthood stands according to the power of an endless life (Hebrews 7:16). Every inferior altar in your family history is answerable to that one.

"The blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel." (Hebrews 12:24 NKJV)

History speaks. Trauma speaks. Accusation speaks. But the blood of Jesus speaks a better word—forgiveness over condemnation, adoption over rejection, reconciliation over division, healing over generational wounds, life over death. Your bloodline may explain part of the battle. The blood of Jesus determines the covenant ground on which you stand.

You Are Already a Priest

Before anything can be built, one question must be answered: Who has standing to establish an altar over a family line? Under the old covenant the answer was narrow. One tribe, one family within that tribe, one man, once a year, into one room, never without blood.

Then Peter wrote to ordinary Believers scattered across pagan provinces, many of them slaves:

"You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." (1 Peter 2:5 NKJV)

"But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people." (1 Peter 2:9 NKJV)

Read the tenses. They don't say, "you may one day become." They say, "you are."

Peter draws from God's declaration at Sinai that Israel would be a kingdom of priests. The Levitical priesthood served a particular covenant function, but God's larger design was always a people who would belong to Him and minister in His presence. In Christ, that original design is restored. "Royal" speaks of governance—delegated authority, dominion, jurisdiction in a sphere. "Priesthood" speaks of ministry—worship, intercession, blessing, tending the presence of God. Held together, they describe a people who govern by first ministering to the Lord. (Photo via Pixabay)

That is precisely what a household requires. If we try to govern our families without ministering to God, authority becomes control. If we minister to God privately but refuse to steward the atmosphere and relationships of the home, spirituality becomes passivity dressed as humility.

A priestly family is not a religious institution with a family living inside it. If a home becomes governed by pressure, performance, or fear, you have not established the superior altar. You have built another inferior pattern and given it Christian vocabulary. The priesthood of Christ produces service, love, honor, truth, humility, reconciliation, and access to God.

You do not have to qualify for this. You were purchased into it. The only remaining question is whether the priest will take up the office in his own house.

Recovering the Children

There is an old strategy in Scripture, and it is always aimed at the next generation. Pharaoh ordered the death of Israel's newborn sons. Herod killed the children of Bethlehem. When a deliverer is coming, the children become a target.

The strategy has not changed. The delivery system has. Our children can remain physically inside our homes while their attention, imagination, identity, and affections are being formed somewhere else. The enemy does not always need to remove a child from a household. He only needs other influences to out-disciple it.

Discipleship is not primarily the transfer of information. It is formed through time, attention, affection, imitation, interpretation, and repeated practice. Whoever consistently holds those things is forming the child, whether or not anyone calls it discipleship.

Four claimants are doing that work in most households right now:

1. The classroom carries assumptions about identity, authority, truth, and the nature of a human being. A child may spend a thousand hours a year in a formation environment shaped by someone else's assumptions, and forty hours in anything a household would call spiritual instruction. That ratio is the discipleship.

2. The screen transmits not arguments but desire. It shows children what strength, love, beauty, and belonging are supposed to look like. No one debates a story. They absorb it.

3. The phone is, by any honest diagnostic, a functioning altar. The power source is a designed dopamine loop. The priesthood is an algorithm that knows your child's attention patterns better than you do and never sleeps. The sacrifice is sleep, imagination, boredom, and friendship. The jurisdiction includes the last moment before sleep and the first moment after waking. Historically, those two moments belonged to the Shema [the Hebrew practice of evening and morning prayers that declare the oneness of God and encompass His greatest commandment—to love God with all one's heart, soul, and strength].

4. The machine. AI tools can inform, assist, and create. There is real good in them, and I use them in my own work. But hear the distinction, because everything turns on it.

"For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers." (1 Corinthians 4:15 NKJV)

A tool can inform. Only a father, a mother, or a faithful spiritual parent can impart. A machine cannot model faithfulness over thirty years, lay hands on your son and speak a blessing that carries covenant weight, or say the sentence a child most needs: "I know you, and I am for you, and I am not leaving."

Notice what every one of those four claimants has in common. Not one of them primarily attacks belief. All of them take hours. You cannot out-argue a thousand hours. You can only out-love, out-presence, and out-story them. And here is the encouraging arithmetic: every claimant has volume, but not one of them has covenant, blood, authority, or love. You have all four. (Photo via Pixabay)

Cleansed, Clothed, and Commissioned

Zechariah saw Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord in filthy garments, with the accuser at his right hand (Zechariah 3:1). The accuser saw his condition. God saw both his condition and his calling.

The Lord rebuked the accuser and gave this order: "Take away the filthy garments from him... See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes" (Zechariah 3:4 NKJV). Grace did not pretend the garments were clean. It removed them. Then God clothed him, because a priest cannot serve unclean, and he cannot serve unclothed either.

Then came the charge: walk in My ways, keep My command, judge My house, have charge of My courts. God did not cleanse Joshua to retire him. He cleansed him to recommission him. The accuser uses your condition and your family record to keep you from your assignment. The blood answers the accusation, restores your identity, and calls you back into faithful stewardship. Cleansing restores identity. Identity produces consecration. Consecration expresses itself through stewardship. Faithful stewardship prepares us for delegated authority.

We ask God for authority over cities and nations. God asks whether we will tend the house already entrusted to us. Tend your heart. Tend your marriage. Tend your children and grandchildren. Tend the relationships that have gone quiet. Tend the atmosphere, the resources, and the assignments already in your hands. The family is not the limit of the assignment. It is the foundation of it.

How to Walk It Out

• Begin with an honest household altar audit. Name the repeated patterns that shape your home's atmosphere. What is feared? What receives the best hours? What can never be discussed? What happens when money is tight, when someone fails, when someone succeeds? You cannot decommission what you refuse to name.

• Bring your household under the finished work of Christ. Repent for your own participation in destructive patterns. Forgive those who wounded you. Renounce the agreements formed in pain. Replace them with the ways of Christ. Physical acts—communion, anointing a doorway, signing a family covenant—can embody that decision, but they do not replace obedience, repaired relationships, or sustained discipleship.

• Count the hours for one ordinary week. Without changing anything, record how much time goes to screens, devices, and entertainment versus undistracted conversation, Scripture, shared meals, and relationships with wise elders. Use the results not to shame your household but to recover what has been surrendered without intention.

• Speak one blessing you have withheld. Find a son, a daughter, a parent, a sibling, a spiritual child. Use their name. Speak what you see God forming in them. Bless their future without attempting to control it. Sons and daughters should not have to wonder whether the people who raised them are for them.

Prophetic Declaration

Hear this, royal priest in the household of God, the accuser may have read your family record aloud for years and attempted to name it as your future. It was never prophecy. It was history. In Christ, the past does not hold jurisdiction over a life surrendered to Him.

The Lord is not exposing the old garments to shame you. He is removing what cannot serve in His presence and clothing you in the righteousness of Christ. He is restoring you to ministry before Him.

Walk in His ways. Keep His charge. Tend His house.

What your fathers and mothers could not finish, you are graced to continue. What you cannot finish, prepare your sons and daughters to carry. May the Spirit of God rest upon your household. May the Word of God remain in your mouths. May hearts turn, relationships heal, testimonies be remembered, and a priestly people arise from generation to generation.
