The Steep and Difficult Climb
The mountain rose like a giant into the clouds. Its jagged cliffs pierced the sky. Snow clung stubbornly to its upper ridges. The path upward was narrow, steep, and unforgiving. Loose stones shifted beneath weary feet. Bitter winds howled through the rocky passes.
Many had begun the climb. Some turned back when the trail became difficult. Others stopped when exhaustion set in. Still others settled on lower ledges, convincing themselves that halfway was far enough.
But a small company continued upward, step by step, breath by breath. Sometimes they were crawling, sometimes slipping, sometimes resting, yet always moving higher.
Their muscles burned. Their legs trembled. Their hands became scraped and bruised against the rough stone. More than once they wondered if the summit was worth the struggle.
Who May Ascend Into the Hill of the Lord?
Then one traveler rounded a bend and stopped. His eyes filled with tears. Far above, beyond the final ridge, he saw a golden light—the summit. And there, spread before him, was something he never expected: a great banquet, tables stretching farther than the eye could see, banners waving in the wind, music filling the air, and at the center stood the King Himself. The climb had been difficult. The feast was worth it all.
Dear ones, the Christian life is often compared to a journey, but perhaps it is also a mountain—not a mountain of self-effort, not a mountain climbed through human strength, but the holy mountain of the Lord.
David asked: "Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place?" (Psalm 24:3 NKJV)
The Lord has always called His people upward—higher than compromise, higher than lukewarm religion, higher than shallow Christianity, and higher than merely knowing about Him. He calls us into intimacy, into holiness, into surrender, and into deeper union with Himself.
Transformation in the Difficult Places
Yet every Believer quickly discovers that the upward path is not easy. There are valleys to cross, storms to endure, temptations to resist, disappointments that wound the heart, and prayers that seem unanswered. There are seasons when God feels near and seasons when He seems hidden behind the clouds.
Many people begin the climb with enthusiasm. Few continue when the path becomes difficult. Yet it is often the difficult places that produce the deepest transformation.
The mountain trail strips away everything unnecessary. Pride begins to die. Self-reliance begins to crumble. The love of the world loses its grip. The applause of men becomes less important. As we continue upward, Christ becomes more precious.
Ascending Into Intimate Communion
What once felt like loss becomes gain. What once felt like sacrifice becomes joy. The higher we climb, the more clearly we see the beauty of the King. This is the deeper life, not merely receiving Christ as Savior but pursuing Him as our Beloved. It's not simply escaping judgment but ascending into intimate communion.
The deeper life has never been about obtaining spiritual experiences. It is about becoming so captivated by Jesus that nothing else satisfies. Every difficult season becomes another step upward. Every trial becomes another opportunity to trust Him. Every hardship becomes another stone beneath our feet as we ascend His holy mountain. (Photo via Unsplash)
One day the climb will end. The weary pilgrim will reach the summit. The storms will cease. The tears will dry. The battle will be over. The crown will be given. Scripture speaks of this glorious day: "Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life" (Revelation 2:10 NKJV).
The Marriage Supper of the Lamb
Imagine arriving at the summit after years of faithful endurance. Imagine seeing the King face to face. Imagine hearing His voice, "Well done, good and faithful servant." Imagine discovering that every trial had purpose. Every tear was seen. Every sacrifice was remembered. Every lonely prayer was treasured. And then imagine the feast—the Marriage Supper of the Lamb—with a table prepared for overcomers, a banquet prepared for those who continued climbing when others quit, and a celebration prepared for those who endured.
Dear friend, perhaps your climb feels difficult today. Perhaps the trail is steep. Perhaps the wind is strong. Perhaps your legs are weary. Do not stop. Do not camp halfway up the mountain. Do not turn back. The summit is nearer than you think. The King is waiting above. The crown has already been prepared. And beyond the final ridge is a feast unlike anything this world could ever offer.
Keep climbing.
Keep trusting.
Keep seeking.
Keep ascending the holy mountain of the Lord.
For those who endure the climb will one day sit at His table, gaze upon His beauty, and discover that every difficult step was worth it all.
