Living as a Gardener, Like Our Shepherd-King
By La Vonne Earl
As we've step into the month of March, a season of renewal and growth, our hearts turn to the art of gardening and the profound symbolism it holds for our spiritual journey. Just as we witness flowers blooming and nature awakening, we are reminded of the True Gardener of our souls who tends to us with love and care.
God's transformative work in our lives ushers in new beginnings and opportunities for fruitfulness.
"The season has changed, the bondage of your barren winter has ended, and the season of hiding is over and gone. The rains have soaked the earth and left it bright with blossoming flowers. The season for singing and pruning the vines has arrived." (Song of Songs 2:11–12 TPT)
Gardens are such a beautiful thing, as they take us back to the very beginning with the Lord who reveals Himself as a cultivator.
"Then YAHWEH-God planted a lush garden paradise in the East, in the Land of Delight, and there He placed the man He had formed." (Genesis 2:8 TPT)
Since we have been created in the image of God and we are destined to become like Him, then we too shall live like a gardener, cultivating our life to bear beautiful fruit. (Photo via Pexels)
What Seeds Are We Planting?
Scripture reminds us that what we plant will always be the very thing we harvest.
"The harvest you reap reveals the seed that you planted. If you plant the corrupt seeds of self-life into this natural realm, you can expect a harvest of corruption. If you plant the good seeds of Spirit-life you will reap beautiful fruits that grow from the everlasting life of the Spirit." (Galatians 6:8 TPT)
In our daily interactions and endeavors, we are constantly planting seeds through our words, actions, and attitudes. By consciously choosing to plant seeds of love, encouragement, and integrity, we pave the way for a harvest of beauty and goodness.
How Is the Soil of Our Hearts?
Just as healthy soil is essential for a thriving garden, our hearts must be receptive, nourished, and free of weeds like resentment and distraction. When we neglect the condition of our inner soil, even good seeds struggle to take root and flourish. Let us invite the Gentle Gardener to cultivate our hearts and remove any hindrances to growth.
Are You Planted in the Right Location?
Wise individuals allow God to guide their placement, recognizing that not every seed thrives in every environment. By seeking God's wisdom for our assignments, seasons, and surroundings, we position ourselves for fruitful growth.
"He will be standing firm like a flourishing tree planted by God's design, deeply rooted by the brooks of bliss, bearing fruit in every season of life. He is never dry, never fainting, ever blessed, ever prosperous." (Psalm 1:3 TPT) (Photo via Snappy Goat)
Are You Growing Towards Truth and Light?
God is light, and growth flourishes in the presence of truth and transparency. When we invite God into every aspect of our lives, allowing His light to illuminate our paths, we experience accelerated growth and transformation. Secrecy hinders fruitfulness, while openness to God's truth brings life and vitality.
"And this Light never fails to shine through darkness—Light that darkness could not overcome!" (John 1:5 TPT)
Are You Trusting the Pace of God?
Patience is a virtue in gardening, and likewise in our spiritual journey. Let us be encouraged to trust in God's timing and unseen work, knowing that He is faithful to bring about the fulfillment of His promises. As we rest in His care and cultivate patience, we align ourselves with His perfect pace and timing.
"For this is the hope of our salvation. But hope means that we must trust and wait for what is still unseen. For why would we need to hope for something we already have? So because our hope is set on what is yet to be seen, we patiently keep on waiting for its fulfillment." (Romans 8:24–25 TPT)
My fellow gardeners, let us embrace the role of co-laborers with our Shepherd-King, tending to the garden of our souls with diligence and trust. By planting seeds of love, nurturing healthy hearts, seeking divine placement, walking in truth, and embracing patience, we embody the essence of true productivity and spiritual growth. May we walk in step with our Gentle Gardener, yielding a harvest of beauty and abundance that reflects His glory and grace.
