Trusting in the Free Fall
I want to share some encouragement with you today. I pray this will speak to those who need this specific word in this season.
Oftentimes, we can get caught in the tension between waiting on the Lord for direction, or a word, and just taking a leap of faith.
Have you ever found yourself in that kind of place?
In my own history with God, I have made major life decisions, feeling fully confident I have heard from Him on what to do. Other times, I have made important decisions in blind faith, and I've felt uncertain, wondering if I am doing the right thing. Those choices have felt like skydiving out of an airplane, trusting that I will find a safe place to land.
When I think back on those moments, I see that God took care of me every time. He led me forward with confirmations and honored my wild, free-fall acts of faith. However, I will let you guess which scenario I prefer. (Hint: I don't like heights!)
Starting Even Without the Whole Picture
In reading Exodus 3 this morning, the Lord began to speak to me about trusting Him in this free-fall faith kind of way.
In this passage, Moses encountered God in a burning bush. You will most likely be familiar with the story. Yahweh called Moses to lead the people out of Egypt. When Moses struggled with the call, Yahweh responded in a powerful way. Let's take a look. (Wikimedia Commons)
"But Moses protested to God, 'Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?'
"God answered, 'I will be with you. And this is your sign that I am the one who has sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God at this very mountain.'" (Exodus 3:11–12 NLT)
Did you catch that? Moses needed to take action and obey God fully before his ultimate confirmation would come. He had to go to Egypt, in faith, and trust God would be with him the whole way.
I believe Yahweh delights to answer us with confirmations. Yet, what if God gives us just one step of obedience and not the whole picture at the start? What if He has already spoken to us several times, and we are still hesitant to take action because we want more clarity and confirmation? What if He has heard our 1,000 prayers about a particular decision, and He's asking us to trust and step forward in faith?
"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him." (Hebrews 11:6 NIV)
What if He is asking you to start moving... and afterward, you'll know it was Him? Sometimes we aren't sure what to do or what changes to make; we just know we can't stay where we are. Life doesn't flow in stagnant waters. Life flows where the river goes. Sometimes we have been standing in stagnant waters for far too long, and Jesus is inviting us to get into His moving river. Every "No" Will Lead to God's "Yes"
If you've been feeling stuck, if you've been feeling indecisive, and if you have waited and prayed for a long time and nothing has seemingly changed, maybe it's time to start moving in faith, even if it's just one small step at a time.
"Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will act." (Psalm 37:5 ESV)
As we make decisions and commit our way to the Lord, every shut door will eventually lead to His open doors. Every blockade will lead to an open road. Every "no" will lead to God's "yes" in due time.
Perhaps the direction God has given you right now is to pray and wait and not move until it's time—that's beautiful! But for some of us, what if we are still waiting on God? What if He is waiting on us to take a free-fall leap of faith and trust Him in the journey?
