Todd White: "Hearing God's Voice - Through His Word"

Todd White
May 15, 2022

From the Desks of Steve Shultz and Julie A. Smith:

Steve Shultz

This is an extremely well-written and thought-out message from Todd White. As you read through this, it will convict you in a very good way.

After all, that is what the Word of God does: "For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12).

Todd teaches us here about hearing God's voice THROUGH His living Word:

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16, NKJV). Reproof and correction. I want to be taught God's Word – reproof. If I sit and read God's Word, and I believe I can't get it with my brain, God HAS to reveal it to me, and it HAS to come alive. Then that Word is going to come to me and convict me of all the areas in my life that need to change. This is why it's so important to dive into the Word of God and ask God to cut you deep.

Steve ShultzNow that by itself is full of deep and godly wisdom for your life!

We pray, as you read the rest of Todd's message, that hearing God's voice through His Word will make it come alive to you as never before! (To Subscribe to the Elijah List subscribe here.)

No Foggy Hearing

I don't believe God wants anyone to carry stuff from the last season into this one. I believe that we always need to grow. We can't afford to have foggy hearing when it comes to our Father.

Jesus says that His sheep will hear His voice, and a stranger's they will not follow (John 10:4-5). I have to be able to distinguish which voice is the Father's and which is the stranger's. Additionally, I have to understand that if the voice I'm hearing doesn't line up with God's Word, it is not God's voice.

God will violate your understanding of the Word, but He won't violate His Word. For example, you could grow up believing that God doesn't heal, and then you get healed. That's a violation of your understanding, and that's a good one.

Holiness isn't something you can do. Holiness is the byproduct of BEING RIGHT WITH GOD. However, if we don't understand what "being right with God" means, holiness is far away. I have to understand that I'm right with the One who created me; that I can come to Him at any time and He's never mad at me – He wants to father me.

True Imitators

I have taught and will continue to teach identity. The identity that I want you to understand is that in Ephesians 5:1-2 (NKJV) it says, "Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love..." That's an identity that none of us can pull off.

How can I imitate the One Who created me? Walking in love is what this is about. It's not feel-good love; it's God-like love. If I love you and I'm an imitator of God, when you're in a place you shouldn't be, I'm going to warn you because it's not safe for you. If I don't love you, I'm going to just let you go and not care.

Confronting someone lovingly is one of the hardest things to do, especially when you're close to someone, but it's the first thing the Gospel instructs us to do. That person may say, "Hey, don't judge me; only God can judge me." Trust me; you don't want that. One day there'll be a judgment day, but it'll be a good day if you listen to correction now, before it's too late.

I'm in love with God, and I love Him with everything that's in me. I'm broken at the state of the Church – where we're at with our intimacy with God. Intimacy starts with a guilt-free, condemnation-free, shame-free conscience that's at rest because of the Blood of Jesus when we say "yes" to Him.

All Your Heart, Soul and Mind

We shouldn't come to Jesus just for a better day. He doesn't say, "Here, now have your best day." He says, "Give Me your day."

Jesus said in Matthew 22:37-40 (NKJV), "...'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the prophets." (Photo via Unsplash)

Sometimes we think that Jesus swept the commandments away, but He fulfilled them. He actually didn't sweep them away; He intensified them. This is why we must live, love, walk, and talk like we love God, spending time with God while no one is looking, just loving Him. If my mind and my heart are focused on Him all the minutes of the day, that's what He wants. He paid a price for you to live and be an imitator of God. Walk in love. What does love look like? Jesus.

In 2 Timothy 3:16 (NASB) it says, "All Scripture is inspired by God..." God and His Word are one. The Bible says that God honors His Word above His own name. If you say you love God, then you have to honor the infallibility of His Word. So, if you're to say you love God, but don't love His Word, believe in His Word, or trust in His Word, then the true love of God isn't happening.

Being Bible Smart

Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV) says, "For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit..." The confusing part about this is that we hear, "We're going to save souls; we're going after souls," and then all of a sudden, it's spirit, soul, and body. God is talking about our three-part being. He wants our spirits born again.

Our spirits get that Word, no question. The Holy Spirit communicates with our spirits. Our souls are not in first place. If we read the Word of God with just our brains, we're trying to be book smart, but that doesn't change our lives. "Bible smart" is spirit, soul, and body. He wants to take the Word of God, which is living and powerful, and divide our souls from our spirits.

So what happens is God cuts division between our thinking and spirits, and He wants to fix the irrational thinking processes and issues of life that stem from our hearts.

When I get God's Word, I have to humble myself and understand that I will never get it logically. The Bible is not for the carnal mind. The Bible tells us the carnal mind is in enmity with God. You can be born again and walk away and not do anything to crush the carnal mind that still speaks louder than your spirit.

Jesus paid a price for us to have intimacy – to have relationship – not a cloud of condemnation, guilt, and doubt. We have to open the Bible for ourselves and tell God that we need His help. (Photo via Unsplash)

God is an amazing Dad who always has good thoughts about me. God's Word says that His thoughts for me outnumber all the grains of sand – each grain represents one thought for my welfare. That's my Father. I need to learn some of those thoughts because I can't afford to think thoughts that are not in His mind. I need to set my mind on things above, not below. He didn't save me to let me sit back there. He didn't save me just so I could say I believe in God.

Please Help Me to See More

I love is this prayer: "God, I have no idea what I'm reading here; everything doesn't make sense. And, God, if You don't breathe on this, then I will never understand. I don't want to be the way that I am. I need You to open my eyes to what this means. God, it says that I was blind, but now I see. But it doesn't seem like I can see very well. Please help me to see more. God, I want to see people the way that You see them. I'm tired of being hurt by everybody. Show me what it means to not be hurt."

Talking to a book, people will think you're psycho. But this Book will talk back to you. I'm not kidding you. And then what are people going to think? When I wake up in the morning, my first thought is Jesus. I think about Him all day. He didn't save me so that I could have a part-time God and a full-time world. He didn't save me for part-time. We're full-time Christ-like ones. Christ wasn't His last name. Christ means "anointed one." We're little anointed ones. Jesus didn't pay a price for you to know it and quote it; He paid a price for you to understand it with your heart and to become it.

Jesus was the Word made flesh that came and dwelt among men. God wants our flesh to become the very Word that we say we know.

It says in Colossians 3:17 (NKJV), "And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus..." How can you do a word? Everything we do in our life – walking, talking, running errands, walking with your spouse, watching something on TV – we do it all unto the Lord. That's not legalism. When the love of God hits you, the things that break His heart, break yours.

Luke 17:33 (NASB) tells us, "Whoever strives to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will keep it."

God, help us to be hungry for the Word of Truth!

Todd White is the founder and president of Lifestyle Christianity, located in Watauga, Texas. Lifestyle Christianity began in 2014 as the evangelistic ministry of Todd White. Todd became a Christian in 2004 when he had a powerful salvation experience. Todd was a drug addict and atheist for 22 years. He was at the point of suicide when God came into his life and set him free. As a new Believer, Todd began sharing the simplicity of the Gospel of the Kingdom and what Jesus Christ accomplished at the Cross. It was common for Todd to see dozens of people healed as he shared Christ's love for them throughout his normal everyday life. Since that time, Todd has been passionately pursuing his call to see people fully walking in their identity in both the purity and power available in Christ. Lifestyle Christianity desires to see people walk in their God-given identity. Gripped by the simplicity of the Gospel and what Jesus Christ accomplished on the Cross, our heart is to see people brave the waves of fear and share the love of Jesus everywhere that they go.
