It's a familiar scene for every parent. It's the middle of the night, and your two-week-old baby is crying. You pick him up and comfort him. Maybe you feed him. Change his diaper. Or just hold and rock him to sleep. He soon calms down. He's content.
Now imagine a very different scenario. Your newborn has been crying for days, and you haven't slept. You've tried everything, but your baby just cannot be comforted. Even worse, you cannot swaddle, hold, rock, and can barely even touch him. If you do, he'll scream out in excruciating pain.
It's unimaginable, but it's true.
This is the heart-wrenching reality for over a half a million babies, children, and young adults worldwide. These children suffer from a rare genetic condition called Epidermolysis Bullosa, otherwise known as EB. Mutated genes that involve a missing thin layer of protein—a kind of "Velcro" that holds the skin together—causes skin to blister and fall off, resulting in extreme pain, infection, scarring, limb loss, and even death.
To care for children suffering from EB, parents and caregivers carefully wrap their precious little ones in expensive ointments and bandages, just to protect the fragile, blistering skin. This process takes anywhere from 2–5 hours every day, and every second of it is excruciatingly painful for these children. |
