We Are Called to Be Living Epistles

As I was praying recently, I was impressed by the Spirit to write on the importance of revelation. Back in the day when I was a student in elementary school, we were taught the 3R's – Reading, 'Riting and 'Rithmetic. As Kingdom citizens, I want to suggest a spiritual 3R's for leaders: Revelation, Relationships, and Resources, with a 4th and 5th added in for good measure: Reformation and Renaissance. In this essay I will focus on just the first, Revelation.

As Kingdom leaders and disciples of Christ, we are to be living epistles, "Known and read of all men" (2 Cor. 3:2, KJV). That means our lives are designed and intended by God to be living revelation. Habakkuk 2:2 (NIV) says, "Then the LORD replied: 'Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.'" In other words, revelation is intended to be applied and put into practice by those who read or hear it.

Revelation Provides or Projects Not Only A Training But A Restraining Force or Function In Society

Prov. 29:18 adds, "Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom's instruction"(NIV, emphasis added). The root word for restraint in Hebrew is para, meaning: "let go, let loose, people, i.e. remove restraint from them."

I find it interesting that God's Word correlates a lack of revelation with people casting off restraint, as we have seen several times in history, including the Hippie Movement of the late 1960's and 1970's in the US with flower power, peace symbols, drug use, rebellion to authority and status quo, dropping out of or rejecting society and social norms, and unrestrained sexuality.

Apparently godly revelation is intended to empower or compel people to run with it, and also to preserve and protect nations and societies, and prevent or preempt the citizens or populations thereof from casting off restraint or inhibitions or conscience or the rule of law, such that "every man did what was right in his own eyes" (Judges 17:6, 17:25).

Individuals, families, schools, governments, churches, etc. all need revelation to function and perform properly and optimally. Just ask generals, prime ministers, presidents, economists, or any of a myriad of other front line professionals about the critical importance and costly nature of revelation.

The wrong revelation can also be as bad or worse than no revelation at times. Wrong revelation is very costly. Just ask Britain about Neville Chamberlain's revelation of "peace in our time." It gave Germany several years' head start on arming and building an army and industrializing their nation, and almost cost England their freedom and survival in World War II. (Photo via Wikipedia)

But, thank God for Winston Churchill, Rees Howells, and others God raised up (such as the US) that had real revelation of those times. In contrast with those who are foolish, those who heed wisdom's instruction are blessed. So, apparently there is a strong correlation between godly revelation and obedience (heeding) and receiving or being the beneficiary of the blessing of God.

The Source of True Revelation Is God

Paul the Apostle says in 2 Cor. 12:6-7 (NLT), "If I wanted to boast, I would be no fool in doing so, because I would be telling the truth. But I won't do it, because I don't want anyone to give me credit beyond what they can see in my life or hear in my message, even though I have received such wonderful revelations from God. So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud."

Paul further states in Gal. 1:11-12 (NIV), "I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the Gospel I preached is not of human origin. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ."

John the Apostle also received divine revelation. "This is a revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants the events that must soon take place. He sent an angel to present this revelation to His servant John, who faithfully reported everything he saw. This is his report of the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ" (Rev. 1:1-2, NLT).

Amos 3:7 (NAS) says, "Surely the Lord GOD does nothing unless He reveals His secret counsel to His servants the prophets." Another synonym for revelation is secret counsel.

You And I Can Receive Divine Revelation Today

Similarly, you and I today should be receiving divine revelation by the Spirit on a regular basis just as the early apostles and prophets did. Revelation is available for all of God's people and God makes it clear in His Word that He is not a respecter of persons (Rom. 2:11, Acts 10:34). (Photo via Wikimedia Commons)

Paul says in 1 Cor. 2:9-12 (NLT, emphasis added), "That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, 'No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him.' But it was to us that God revealed these things by His Spirit. For His Spirit searches out everything and shows us God's deep secrets. No one can know a person's thoughts except that person's own spirit, and no one can know God's thoughts except God's own Spirit. And we have received God's Spirit (not the world's spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us."

Please notice that in both this Scripture and the passage from 2 Cor. 12 cited earlier, Paul describes godly revelation as "wonderful." Indeed it is.

For example, when I wrote my first book on the Kingdom 6 years ago, the Holy Spirit told me the exact date to start (Thanksgiving 2010), and within 30 minutes of sitting down to pray and listen, the Holy Spirit had given me the title and downloaded the table of contents to me for the book.

I wrote that book in 2 months time between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. after working a full day beforehand. The Holy Spirit sustained me and gave me supernatural energy and rest during this time, when I averaged 2-3 hours sleep per night and my job was simply to be a scribe.

The book was already written in Heaven. I just needed to listen, take notes, apply Scripture references and definition of key terms, and add a few personal anecdotes to illustrate key principles and add some color. I was writing on divine assignment and not as a personal goal or to try and become famous or rich or be considered an expert. My motives were pure.

That book, Partnering With The Prophetic, is now in its 3rd printing. As I have been obedient to write other books on the Kingdom as directed by the Holy Spirit, I have experienced similar divine downloads.

As another example, while editing the five-volume Aligning With The Apostolic, which includes chapters from 70 modern-day apostles and apostolic leaders, one evening I was working at my desk and wondering how in the world I was going to finish writing my own chapters, much less be able to organize the other 70 chapters from contributing authors which were all Spirit-led.

I wondered to myself if this challenge would affect my friendships with them. Early that morning, a faithful intercessor had called me to pray for a solution for this mental confusion and blockage. That evening, I literally felt the Holy Spirit overshadow my mind and in less than one hour, about 45 minutes to be exact, God had downloaded the complete organizational structure for all 5 volumes with the order and names of the 12 sections and which chapters belonged to each section.

In the natural I would never have been capable of that. But such is the power of revelation. It's an "aha" or "eureka" experience, when the light bulb comes on, or in some cases, the entire power plant is generating. (Photo via Flickr)

The End Time Army Of Believers Is Alive And Well And Growing

Apostles and prophets form the foundation of the Church (Eph. 2:20) and as such are in constant contact with the Chief Cornerstone, or Head of the Church, Jesus Christ (Eph. 2:20, 1 Pet. 2:6-7, Luke 20:17, Matt. 21:42, Mark 12:10, Acts 4:11), the Apostle and High Priest of our confession (Heb. 3:1).

Foundations are often walked on, covered up, hidden, and out of sight, but they still serve their purpose. Without them, the rest of the building can't go up or hang together or be supported. Apostles and prophets have spiritual gifts that are generative in nature, meaning they generate or receive revelation for the Body of Christ.

Visions, dreams, trances, angelic encounters, intimacy with Jesus and Abba Father and the Holy Spirit, and spiritual experiences—including third Heaven visitations—are all part of the normal lifestyle of genuine, authentic, bona fide, mature apostles and prophets. This end time army of Believers is alive and well and growing in position.

Revelation Alone Is Insufficient Without The Character To Steward It And Walk It Out

However, revelation alone is not enough by itself and is not an end in itself. We must have godly character and our lives are intended and designed to be fruitful (John 15:8) and to be marked by signs, wonders and miracles following (Heb. 2:4). (Photo via Pixabay)

Even Paul was given a thorn in the flesh so that he would not be puffed up with the exceeding greatness of the revelation He received from Jesus. Scripture says, "He that is faithful in little shall be ruler [faithful] over much" (Luke 16:10). Therefore, steward wisely the revelation you have been given and God will give you more. The greater the revelation God shares with you or entrusts you with, the greater the humility and wisdom that will be required to steward it and walk it out.

The Purposes Of Revelation

Revelation helps people to read and to run and to not cast off restraint (that is, to voluntarily choose restraint). Revelation helps bring about reformation or lasting change, renaissance, new methods and approaches, new strategies and insights, new models and paradigms, new inventions, new technologies, and new industries.

Revelation is why the early Church followed and obeyed the apostles' doctrine (Acts 2:42, 5:28) and grew and multiplied and prospered in so doing, because it was an ongoing, continuous flow and stream or ocean of revelation and not a static, sterile sermon, dogma, creed, catechism, or confession.

Revelation is the antidote for the status quo; the Holy Spirit is the Chief Innovation Officer of the Church and by extension the culture to use a current corporate analogy.

Learn to receive, value, embrace and share godly revelation in healthy, wise ways. Stay in the secret place of intimacy and discipleship with Jesus and communion and fellowship with His Spirit and mutual accountability and submission with other spiritual leaders. Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due season (1 Peter 5:6). Selah. (To Subscribe to the Elijah List go here.)
