Coffee is Good for Blood Pressure?

The Surprising Link Between Coffee and Healthy Blood Pressure
Dear Reader,

It's no secret that maintaining healthy blood pressure levels is critical for optimum health. However, one in three U.S. adults—an astonishing 68 million people—are living with high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is defined as levels that are 140 or greater systolic and/or 90 or greater diastolic (140/90 or greater). This can put you at significantly greater risk for several health conditions, including those affecting the heart and kidneys.

Because high blood pressure is so dangerous, I urge you to work with your doctor to bring those levels back down to normal. Instead, I want to talk to you about "normal" blood pressure—and how the acceptable range isn't necessarily optimal for true health.

My name is Dr. Michael Cutler, Contributing Editor to Whole Health Insider, your trusted source for comprehensive natural health and lifestyle information. I have been an eyewitness to remarkable changes in health using natural medicines, alternative therapies and the power of mind and body health.

Today, I am here to tell you about a powerful, safe and highly effective way to not only support healthy blood pressure, but maintain those levels for years to come.

ABOUT DR. MICHAEL CUTLER

Dr. Michael Cutler is a graduate of Brigham Young University, Tulane Medical School and Natividad Medical Center Family Practice Residency in Salinas, CA. In addition to being a Contributing Editor to Whole Health Insider, he is a board-certified family physician with more than 20 years experience, specializing in alternative health remedies. His mission is to share his time-tested natural healing solutions to help you experience optimal health.
Understanding Blood Pressure

Blood pressure reflects how forcefully your heart has to work to pump blood and to relax between contractions. It's expressed in millimeters of mercury. The first number, the systolic value, represents the effort required of the left ventricle to contract and push blood through the circulatory system. The second number, the diastolic pressure, is the force required for your heart to relax.

As I said earlier, high blood pressure is defined as levels that are 140 or greater systolic and/or 90 or greater diastolic (140/90 or greater). For many conventional doctors, it then follows that optimal blood pressure is anything that is less than that.

That is just plain wrong.

Optimal blood pressure needs to be 120 systolic over 80 diastolic or lower (120/80 or lower). This means that those levels that fall between 120-139 systolic over 80-89 diastolic are in a gray area many more alternative-minded physicians are becoming increasingly concerned about.1

Redefining Normal

Experts are quick to note that while blood pressure levels that are on the upper end of "normal" may not be considered an illness, that doesn't mean they aren't still a harbinger of bad news. Much like we see with sub-optimal blood sugar levels, numbers in the upper end of the spectrum let us know that we are on the borderline of poor blood pressure control.

Given this, don't start celebrating just yet if your numbers are below 140/90. You still have some work to do to be truly healthy.

Three Simple Keys to Healthy Blood Pressure

If your blood pressure levels fall between 120-139 systolic and/or 80-89 diastolic, it's in your best interest to try natural blood pressure-supporting therapies. These include the right diet, exercise and stress reduction.

With diet, start by limiting sodium consumption to 1,500 to 2,300 mg a day. Next, eliminate all processed food, which is almost always very high in sodium and low in nutritional value. In addition, avoid foods high in sugar and trans fats. Focus on eating mainly whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes and lean proteins like poultry and seafood. In fact, research shows that protein can have a positive impact on blood pressure.2

The reason exercise is so critical is that it strengthens the heart, and a stronger heart can pump blood throughout the body much more efficiently and with less effort. As a result, the force on your arteries decreases and your blood pressure goes down. Great forms of low-impact aerobic exercise include walking, bike riding, swimming and even dancing. No matter what you choose, aim to exercise at least 30 minutes five days a week.

Lastly, stress can have a profoundly negative impact on blood pressure levels. Fortunately, using stress-reducing techniques have been shown to be highly effective in reducing blood pressure levels. Several of these include deep breathing, meditation, qigong, yoga and tai chi.

When Diet and Exercise Just Aren't Enough

If you are like many of my patients, at this point, you may be thinking, "I've done that! And my blood pressure is still on the higher end of normal." Don't worry, you are not alone. Millions of people continue to have sub-optimal blood pressure levels, even though they exercise and eat right!

But this doesn't have to be YOU. You can continue your healthy lifestyle while giving it a bit of a boost with an incredible natural compound—green coffee bean extract.

Turns out, when coffee beans are green—meaning they are raw and unroasted—they lack both flavor and aroma, which makes them a bad choice for your morning cup of joe. But in this state, they are rich in chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid, two compounds that have been shown to have a beneficial effect on heart health in general—and blood pressure in particular.

The Most Effective Blood Pressure Solution I've Seen in Years

Research shows that chlorogenic and ferulic acids neutralize the well-known family of free radicals—reactive oxygen species (ROS). This means that it can help to support artery health.

ROS not only affect the endothelial cells in your artery walls, but they also make nitric oxide less available in your cells. And you need that nitric oxide to signal your arteries to open wide for healthy blood flow. In this way, green coffee bean extract improves your blood pressure twofold. First, it supports healthy nitric oxide levels. Second, it protects your arteries from the effects of free radicals.

Studies show that chlorogenic acid specifically—particularly that from green coffee bean extract—works to safely optimize blood pressure. In one study, researchers gave patients chlorogenic acid (140 mg/day) from green coffee bean extract. Those taking the chlorogenic acid enjoyed significant improvements in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels, with no adverse side effects.3

In another clinical trial, researchers tested the amount of green coffee bean extract. They found that as little as 93 mg a day significantly improved systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels in just 28 days.4

Best of all, green coffee bean extract contains less caffeine than a cup of decaf!

Not ALL Green Coffee Bean Extract Is Created Equal

In addition to my position as a Contributing Editor to Whole Health Insider, I am also an advisor for a natural supplement company called True Health™. After identifying the breakthrough blood pressure benefits of green coffee bean extract, I worked with my product experts at True Health to formulate a product called Ultimate BP™, which includes green coffee bean extract and several other heart-healthy ingredients, including vitamin K2, grape seed extract and pomegranate juice extract.

Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) is an essential nutrient that supports cardiovascular health. Studies have revealed that increased intake of this important nutrient will help support healthy calcium metabolism, ensuring that the mineral gets to your bones, thereby helping to keep your arteries flexible and healthy.5

Both grape seed extract and pomegranate juice extract are powerful antioxidants. Grape seed extract in particular supports your body's levels of nitric oxide—thereby relaxing your blood vessels. Clinical research shows that, in as little as eight weeks, this potent antioxidant improved average systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels by 8.3 mmHg and 5.7 mmHg, respectively.6

You can find all of these—along with groundbreaking green coffee bean extract—in Ultimate BP™. The exclusive combination of green coffee bean extract, vitamin K2, grape seed extract and pomegranate make Ultimate BP™ a highly effective supplement for maintaining healthy blood pressure.
