From the Darkness of Child Sacrifice to the Light of Love
Kaliti is known for being one of the darkest, most difficult areas in Uganda. Witchdoctors are plentiful and child abduction and sacrifice is still being practiced to this day in this region. However, light has begun to dispel the darkness. New hope and a good future is now the expectation of the people in this village.
In 2006, Show Mercy International, a nonprofit organization based in Albany, Oregon, purchased 25 acres of land in this village. The chances of an outside organization or individual actually being able to purchase land in this remote village was unheard of, especially those who put their faith in Jesus. However, God had a different plan; a plan for a hope and a future for the people of Kaliti. Traditionally, land in this region is only passed down from generation to generation. It is the place where many of the former
kings of Uganda are buried and outsiders are typically not welcomed. It is a very prominent Muslim area with extreme poverty all around. Our property is also located across from a mountain known for witchcraft and child sacrificing.
On our first Show Mercy team outreach to the village, Lori Salley, the co-founder of Show Mercy, remembers going door to door handing out mosquito nets to help prevent malaria. She felt the strategy of the Lord was to show His love in demonstration, not words. As they began to distribute the nets, she was overcome with the compassion of Jesus and told the first person, "Jesus loves you so much." At that moment a young man heard her declare His name and began shouting in his native tongue of Lugandan. He was very angry and began running down the road with his friends, machete in hand, warning the people in the village that a "born again" was coming and not to accept help from them. He was the nephew of a Muslim leader in the village. This was certainly a very scary time for the team that was on this mission.

Fortunately, only one person refused the net, an elderly widow who could have certainly used one. When they arrived at the end of the long, dirt road, there were two homes remaining and only one net. They chose the house that they were going to visit and walked to the front porch. Come to find out, this man was the Uncle of the young man who was trying to incite anger in the people. He told the team that he had determined in his heart that if he was not given a net that Show Mercy was only there to help those that were born again and he would not welcome us into this village. However, if we demonstrated the kindness of giving him a net, he would welcome us with open arms. Fortunately, he received the last net. Since that time, the people have turned from being suspicious and angry to smiling and welcoming. Jesus is being glorified in this village.
Over the last few years, we have seen God display His love through many signs and wonders. We have experienced food multiplying, physical healings, salvations and favor with the leaders of the area.
Show Mercy has been working for two years to develop the 25 acres of land called "Field of Dream" (FOD). This is an area that is without fresh water, electricity or any infrastructure. Plans include building team housing, a medical clinic, a food distribution center and 15 children's cottages that will each house 12 orphaned or abandoned children.
This July, Show Mercy is hosting "Awaken to Love," a 3 week mission trip where the hearts of the team members will be awakened, purpose will be discovered and passion will the ignited! This will be the first team to actually stay on the property of Field of Dreams. We will be bringing the love of Jesus to this formerly dark and hopeless village.

This last year, Show Mercy drilled a fresh water well on the property. This well isn’t your typical hand pumped well found in Africa. This well will last for years to come. It is very deep with a submersible electric pump producing an astounding 42 gallons every minute when it is connected to electricity. We have also purchased two 10,000 liter storage tanks to hold the water that is then distributed to the compound and village. We have also contracted for electricity to be brought into the village via the Uganda power grid (at the request of the local leaders). Since the power, once it is provided, is very sporadic at best, it will be necessary for us to purchase a generator.
This generator will enable our team living in Uganda (Varga Family) to move to the property to begin reaching out into the village on a regular basis as well as prepare to bring in many more orphans to live with us. This is so exciting!
There is currently a drought in Uganda and water is very scarce. The children by our property are currently getting drinking water from a filthy, swampy area. Once we raise the funds for the generator, not only will we have water supplied to our base, but we will be able to open up our water tap for the surrounding village. Our well can provide them with plenty of fresh, clean, life-giving water. This generator will literally help to save lives as well as provide power for the base.
The cost of the generator with installation is approximately $11,000, a small price to provide such an important item that will help transform this village. We have already received $1400 towards this project. We also just found out that a donor will MATCH every dollar that is given towards this generator campaign.
