"Don't Fear Darkness - Become the Light God Intended"

Demontae Edmonds, Virginia Beach, VA

Don't Fear Darkness

The Bible uses the natural phenomenons of light and dark to contrast the conflict between good and evil. Darkness embodies an atmosphere of sin, confusion, sickness, depression, and fear. One of the most well-known and most powerful verses in the Bible encourages us not to fear the works of the enemy done in darkness.

"You shall not be afraid of the terror by night..." (Psalm 91:5)

We are encouraged to not be afraid of any works of darkness that might bring fear to those that don't know the Lord; news and bad reports that would bring "terror" to the unbeliever should not move the Believer. Psalm 91 goes even further and is more specific in verse 6.

"[N]or of the pestilence that walks in darkness..." (Psalm 91:6)

A pestilence is defined as "a fatal epidemic disease." The reason I believe that diseases are described as things that "walk in darkness" is because viruses, germs, and bacteria are microscopic and cannot be seen with the natural eye. God says that when we dwell under His divine protection even that which is unseen is seen by Him and He is able to protect us.

Also, we don't have to be afraid of the night, darkness, or terror. "Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep" (Psalm 121:4). We can REST in God's promises and not be full of worry because even while we are at REST, God is at work watching over us. His light shines over us even while we are asleep, dispelling any darkness sent by the enemy, satan.

Let Them See Your Light

The prophet Isaiah prophesied in Isaiah 9:2 about the Lord Jesus' ministry: "The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light has shined."

Jesus fulfilled this prophetic word in the regions of Capernaum and Syria within His ministry. In Matthew 4 we read that for those that where in bondage to some form of darkness (sickness, disease, oppression), He brought light into their darkness. The God in Him was the answer to their woes! Matthew 4:24, "...[T]hey brought unto Him all sick people that where taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which where possessed with devils, and those which where lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and He healed them."

There are many people that we encounter daily the workplace, community, and marketplace that sit in some form of darkness. God is calling us to be the light that they need to find their way out of their darkness. Sharing a Scripture, prayer, word of encouragement, prophetic word, or an act of compassion often breaks through the darkness people are experiencing in their lives and reveals the love of God to them.

There is a popular song that I learned as a kid in Sunday School at church, "This little light of mine I'm going to let it shine. Let it shine. Let it shine." However "kiddie" this song is it's still prophetic in nature. God has given us a light (the Holy Spirit within) us and we are responsible to let it shine to the world around us. The light (God) in you is greater than the darkness in the world!

"No man, when he has lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light." (Luke 8:16)

The Eye Being Single

For years I read Matthew 6:22 and had difficulty comprehending its potency. "The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light." This verse doesn't mean that if you go blind in one eye, or lose an eye, then you will become full of God's light. To simplify this verse, it means that if a person stays focused on the right things, then they will become full of light (wisdom, revelation, peace, etc.).

What we focus on has a direct affect on our mental state, attitude, and emotional health. We all have watched food commercials and focused in on the food being presented and then became hungry afterward. The object of your focus will produce some type of harvest in your life – good (light of God) or bad (darkness). The apostle Paul instructs us what to focus on. (Photo via Unsplash)

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of a good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, THINK ON THESE THINGS." (Philippians 4:8 emphasis mine)

"...and the God of peace shall be with you" (Philippians 4:9). Peace comes to us, even when dark situations may exist in the world, when we get full of the Word of God and follow God's prescription for what to focus on.

Get Full of the Light

It is important to read the Word of God. It is of even greater importance to study the Word of God. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 2:15, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God..." It is even more powerful to allow the Word of God to enter into your heart and become a part of your thinking and being. This is where the Word of God moves from a place of mental assent to being digested by us.

"...Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4). Jesus used the example of the consumption of bread to convey to His disciples how they should approach the Word of God. It is not only to be read and studied but embraced and digested.

Something powerful happens within us when the Word of God becomes engrafted into our being. "The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple" (Psalm 119:130). When the Word of God hits our hearts we receive light – revelation, answers, strength, and abundance. We're going from being in the dark (confused/oppressed/afraid) to gaining understanding.

Have you ever read a Scripture and said to yourself, "I have never seen that before!" It felt almost as if a light bulb went off in your mind or heart. Many times, the Word gives a direct answer to a dilemma. When we get full of enough light from the Word of God we can then carry that light with us wherever we go to bring solutions and answers to others. It is equivalent to turning a light switch on in a dark room. Immediately upon flipping the switch darkness leaves the room. This is the power of even one word from God released or received in faith.

Prayer

Father, we thank You that You are "The Father of Lights" (see James 1:17) and you gave Your Son, Jesus Christ, as ransom for my life. Father, I ask, in Jesus' name, that You would lead and guide me into a greater revelation of Your Word that will give me spiritual understanding and guidance.

"Father, for every dark situation and situation where the enemy would try to bring fear and anxiety to my loved ones I stand on Your Word that will never fail me. I thank You for Your divine protection against threats known or unknown. I thank You, Lord God, that the inside information that You reveal to me from Your Word gives me the victory over the devil and his plots. Father, I bless You in Jesus' name for keeping my mind in perfect peace.
