In Deut. 1:33 Moses recounts to the Israelites how God led them during their desert sojourn with a pillar of cloud (עָנָן) in the day, and a pillar of fire (אֵשׁ) at night. This beacon that we read about has a very practical function in Deut. 1:33, but did it serve another purpose?
