Beware of the Vision Nutrition Hoax

Are You Wasting Your Money on Eye Health Nutrients That Won’t Work?
Dear Reader,

The simple truth is that strong eyesight is essential for maintaining a good quality of life. Sharp eyesight connects us to our world, allows us to stay active, and helps us enjoy doing the things we love. It’s also essential for so many things—like driving a car, reading the mail, dialing the phone, and following a recipe or medicine instructions.

Sadly, a 2012 report by the National Eye Institute revealed that the number of people ages 40 and older affected by vision problems has increased 23 percent since the year 2000!1 Why? Because our eyes are under an increasingly dangerous daily attack. They are bombarded with harmful UV rays of the sun, strained by the glare from computer screens, exposed to numerous environmental toxins, and now more than ever…taxed by our fat- and sugar-loaded American diet.

The good news is that you don’t have to be part of this grim statistic.

My name is Dr. Michael Cutler, Contributing Editor to Whole Health Insider, your trusted source for comprehensive natural health and lifestyle information. I’ve personally experienced remarkable changes in health using natural medicines, alternative therapies and the power of mind and body health. And as a board-certified family physician with more than 20 years of experience, I’ve also seen how these wonderful tools have restored health and vitality to thousands of my patients.

While you may not be able to reverse vision loss or throw away your eyeglasses, I do want to share with you a few ways to improve certain aspects of your vision—areas such as visual acuity, sensitivity to glare and near/far accommodation. What’s fascinating is that the same things that do all of this also nourish your eyes and provide overall support for healthy eyes.

His mission is to share his time-tested natural healing solutions to help you experience optimal health.
Think Beyond Carrots for Your Eye-Supporting Diet

It’s well known that carrots, which are loaded with beta-carotene, are good for your eyes. But there are plenty of other nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables that support eye health.

Try adding dark leafy greens, such as kale, spinach and collard greens to your daily meals. These nutritional powerhouse foods are brimming with antioxidant vitamins, such as A, C and K, which are important for reducing inflammation and maintaining overall good health. They are also great sources of lutein and zeaxanthin—antioxidant nutrients known specifically for their strong support of eye health.
Another eye-savvy food selection is fish, especially salmon, tuna and halibut, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats have been shown in research to support healthy blood vessel growth and function, which is especially important in the delicate tissues of your eyes.2

Protect Your Eyes from the Sun

Think about it. Because your eyes are necessary to see, they are open and exposed to harmful radiation from the sun far more than almost any other part of your body. That’s why you should consider sunglasses to be an essential eye protection tool rather than a fashion statement. Look for a pair that offers full coverage of your eyes and is certified to shield against both UVA and UVB rays.

And if you wear contact lenses, take care to handle them properly to avoid eye infections. Thoroughly clean your hands and the lenses themselves when putting them in and taking them out of your eyes. Also, be sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions about the care and replacement of your lenses.

Take an Eye Break When Needed

An increasing number of hours of our average work and relaxation time these days seem to revolve around “screen time.” If you spend a lot of time looking at a computer screen, phone or other electronic device, your eyes will become strained and fatigued.

The National Eye Institute recommends following the “20-20-20” rule to give your eyes a rest. This means that every 20 minutes you should look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds.

Exposing the Vision Health Myths

Despite what you’ve heard about bilberry, black currant, Eyebright extract and other “vision breakthroughs,” they just don’t come with the scientific backing that shows they can really benefit your eyes.

Yes, they’re antioxidants, but studies now show that you’d have to take an eye-popping amount every day to help your vision. For example, I’ve estimated that you’d have to take over 1,000 mg of bilberry daily to notice any benefit. That would be hard to swallow and cost you well over $100 a month!

And definitely say “no thanks” to unproven herbs from South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. The benefits of these ingredients are unproven in human clinical research and your eyes are too important to play guinea pig.

Science Supports 3 Targeted Nutrients

I know how important healthy vision is to my patients, so I’ve always done my best to stay on top of the latest, most advanced vision research and nutrient support. Unfortunately, most of the vision supplements I’ve investigated only offer hyped up ingredients with little research to back them up.

Worse yet, they don’t give you research-supported amounts of the ingredients shown to actually do your eyes some serious good! I call this manufacturing and marketing trick “pixie dusting” because they include just enough of a nutrient in a supplement formula for it to be listed on the label, but not enough to do much else. And to add insult to injury, these nutrients usually come with absurdly high price tags.

Fortunately, the science is rock-solid when it comes to three particular nutrients that support every part of your eyes. Let’s take a look at each one of these…

Studies Confirm Macula Benefits of Lutein

Lutein is a well-known carotenoid compound that occurs naturally in many plants and vegetables. In plants, lutein absorbs excess light energy, which prevents damage from too much sunlight. This helpful nutrient is also found in high concentrations in the macula (the highly sensitive part of your retina responsible for detailed central vision) and its vision-supporting benefits are well documented.

A recent study by researchers at Harvard University shows that you can increase your odds of maintaining a healthy macula by 67% with a daily combined intake of 6 mg of lutein and zeaxanthin (more on this nutrient in a moment). And further research indicates that if you take more, you’ll get more benefit.

It’s important to note that all forms of lutein are NOT the same. Some forms, such as Lutemax® Lutein is highly purified and much more available to your eyes than the ordinary “ester” form of lutein. In fact, Lutemax® is the kind of lutein used in the famous and far-reaching Age-Related Eye Disease (AREDS-2) study conducted by the National Institutes of Health and the National Eye Institute. This highly absorbable form of lutein can reach the delicate cells of your eyes, where it can work to combat free radicals in your retina, macula and optic nerves—all sensitive parts of your eye that are essential for sharp vision and strong eye health.

The Eye-Supporting Power of Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid with incredible eye-supporting benefits, including improving focus—specifically how quickly the eyes adjust from near to distance vision. (This is extremely important for everyday activities such as driving.) In addition, astaxanthin works to help reduce eye fatigue. In my opinion, it offers a level of support that anyone with vision concerns should have.

As a potent antioxidant, astaxanthin works extremely hard to scavenge free radicals. And nowhere does it shine more than neutralizing the exact free radicals that pose the greatest threat to your eyes: singlet oxygen molecules.

Singlet oxygen molecules are closely tied to the effects of sunlight. But with astaxanthin on your side, you’re safe! Astaxanthin is 550 times more powerful than vitamin E and 11 times more powerful than beta-carotene!3 Since your retinas are nearly constantly exposed to sunlight, you want the peak support that only astaxanthin delivers.

Also, unlike most antioxidant carotenoids, astaxanthin is able to cross the blood-retinal barrier AND is lipid (or fat)-soluble. This means it can more easily reach the vulnerable cells within your eyes. It also means that astaxanthin can more easily become part of the cell membranes, adding even greater strength and support for your eyes.

Crucial Help for Sharp and Vivid Vision from Zeaxanthin

Zeaxanthin is another powerful carotenoid, but its specialty is supporting the proper function of the “cone” photoreceptor cells of your macula, which allow you to see in vivid color. It’s also important for supporting the central part of your visual field to stay sharp and for maintaining eye lens health. Zeaxanthin and lutein work hand-in-hand for optimal eye health.

The Harvard University research that I mentioned earlier looked at the effects of taking both lutein and zeaxanthin, leaving no doubt that these two super carotenoids work together to keep your eye lens and macula healthy for optimal vision.

But the Harvard study wasn’t the first to look at the benefits of taking both. In an August 2010 article published in Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, researchers concluded that lutein and zeaxanthin filtered short wavelength light and limited free radicals in the retina. They also found that a mixture of these carotenoids was more effective than any individual one at the same total concentration.4

A Vision Supplement with Everything You Need

If you’ve looked for a vision support supplement to help support your eyes and vision, you know that there is an astonishing assortment available. But, as you’ve just learned, many include questionable ingredients that cost a bundle, but are short on research-supported benefits. And others don’t deliver the quality nutrients that have been shown to promote optimal eye health.

Given this, I was determined to develop a formula with the top 3 research backed eye-supporting nutrients in dosages shown to bring you real eye health benefits. I worked tirelessly with my research team at True Health™—a leader in the natural health supplement industry—to develop an extraordinary and unique vision supplement with everything you need…and nothing you don’t.
