Rosh HaShanah begins on the eve of Sept. 24 and ushers in the 10 Days of Awe. Jews celebrate with honey and apples, symbolizing hope for a "sweet" year. These days are a time of repentance, prayer, good deeds and giving.
When you have a child with special needs, however, holidays can be anything but a break. SHALVA, the Association for Mentally and Physically Challenged Children in Israel, knows that and responds to the personal needs of these children while also supporting their families.
SHALVA's Respite Program is a double portion blessing: We give children with special needs a chance to spend time on their own while their families experience a true Sabbath rest.
You too can bring a drop of sweetness to them this Rosh HaShanah. With your help, these families will get a chance to renew their strength so that when the holidays come, they can CELEBRATE with their children.
A night of respite allows families "peace of mind" - shalva in Hebrew. Your gift of $60 will sponsor a night of respite for one child and bring shalva to their entire family.
In Numbers 29, Rosh HaShanah is called the Day of Trumpets (Yom Teruah) - one of the seven festivals the Lord commands us to observe. All around Israel, the sound of shofars will be heard. As we hear the shofars blow, we can partake in this Biblical feast.
