Tiffany Ann LewisDo not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Psalm 37:1-3

In this Psalm, David is instructing the children of God not to fret when it seems like everyone around you is prospering, especially the unrighteous. Put in modern day vernacular, what that looks like is when you can't find a job and others keep getting promotions – don't fret. When you have been believing for a healing that hasn't come yet and others are walking around healthy as can be – don't fret. When your marriage is a wreck, your kids are rebellious, and your dog is tearing up the yard – don't fret. Whether certain people are Believers or unbelievers – don't fret. Even if your next door neighbors are the Cleavers – don't fret!

Easier said than done, eh? The antidote given by King David for "fretting" is to feed on the Lord's faithfulness. I can honestly tell you that the only true comfort I find is the faithfulness of God. Like Psalm 27:13 says, I truly would lose heart if I didn't believe that I would see the goodness of the Lord while I am living and breathing. Nevertheless, there are more times than I care to admit that the worries of the world knock me out. This is why it is crucial that we feed on His faithfulness. Yet, how do we do that? One of the primary ways is to feast on His Word. For it is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4).

We see a classic example of this in the third chapter of the Book of Lamentations. The author, whom we believe to be the prophet Jeremiah, was suffering through God's chastisement along with his people. As a result of his distress, Jeremiah confessed that his soul was far from any peace, that he had forgotten what happiness was, and that his strength was gone. He felt that God shut out his prayers and had lost his expectant hope in the Lord through his terrible struggle.

I see something that is a comfort to me today – Jeremiah knew all of this was coming. After all, it was he who prophesied to the children of God to repent and warn them of God's corrective chastisement (see Jeremiah 25). This reveals to us that, although we may know trials and tribulations are coming, it's hard to stay strong in the midst of the suffering. It's easy to give in to the despair and begin to fret. Can you identify? If so, it's important to see what he did next.

Despite all his feelings of being forsaken, Jeremiah prayed again! He boldly said, "Remember my affliction and roaming, the wormwood and the gall" (Lamentations 3:19). Now, this word for "remember" doesn't imply that God forgot His children. Heavens, no! The Hebrew word used here is zakar (Strong's #2142) and speaks of recalling something, meditating on it, purposefully pulling it up in your mind. Jeremiah was asking God to think on him, to focus His Divine intentions on him!

I'm not sure what happened between Jeremiah and God at that moment, but Scripture records a significant change in Jeremiah. You see, he was thinking on (remembering) the affliction (the roaming, wormwood, and gall) and his soul was sinking because of it: "My soul still remembers and sinks within me" (Lamentations 3:20). Yet, after praying again to God, something happened. Instead of thinking on his circumstances, he "turned to the Lord" and found hope. "This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope" (Lamentations 3:21).

Turn To The Lord

"Recall" is connected to one of the primary words used for repentance, shuwb (Strong's #7725), and means to turn back or return. You see, Jeremiah was thinking on his suffering, which was, in a sense, putting a spiritual distance between himself and God. All he had to do was turn his thoughts to the Lord, to return to Him. James encourages us similarly: "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you..." (James 4:7-8).

Jeremiah went from thinking on his circumstances to thinking on God and was flooded with the two verses which have become a hallmark to our faith: "Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness" (Lamentations 3:22-23). O hallelujah!

He fed on God's faithfulness! He understood that even though they were in a season of chastisement, it was because of God's mercy that they weren't totally destroyed. They had sinned by departing from Him (spiritually and physically), thus they deserved the punishment. Nevertheless, while it's true that God was giving them a spanking, He was also giving them mercy and sparing them because He is compassionate (which will never fail) and He is faithful.

I want to be very clear here, due to the sensitivity of suffering, to say that not ALL suffering is because of the Lord's chastening hand; nevertheless, God will use ALL suffering for His glory and produce character in us. "...tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3b-4).

The Picture That Spells God's Faithfulness

In closing, I would like to share with you a spiritual picture that the Hebrew letters for God's faithfulness spell.

The Hebrew word for faith in both the passages we have studied today is 'emuwnah (Strong's #530) and comes from a root with a word that I'm sure you are familiar with: Amen (pronounced ah-maynStrong's #539). At its core, amen means firmness and support. It is used to describe a foster-father/mother or nurse who supports and nourishes a child.

Amen is spelled: aleph – mem – nun.

Aleph – is a symbol of strength. It is the picture of a strong ox and represents a sacrificed animal.
Mem – is a picture of water and chaos.
Nun – is considered the faithful letter because it represents our faithful God – the steadfast, unwavering, unfaltering, unswerving, faithful Lord and King. As a picture, it represents life, seed, activity, and fish.

As we put these letters together we can see the strong sacrifice of Jesus, our Aleph, swimming like a fish (the nun), in all the crazy waters (the mem) of our chaos to support us, because He is faithful (the nun) and He loves us with a never-ending love.

In Revelation 3:14 Jesus calls Himself "the Amen": "These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God." Beloved, Jesus Christ is our Amen, our faithful God. He is our support when we are weary and will meet our every need. He is the Word of God, and as we feed on Him we will feed on God's faithfulness and be supernaturally satisfied. Amen and Amen.
