This new program is only for small ministries, missions, and churches. What is small? Under $10,000 per year. The IRS wants to know how much you expect to bring in during the first three years of operation. If under $10,000 per year, the IRS charges only $400 rather than the usual fee of $850. If under $10,000 per year, you will probably qualify for our $995 Self Service Plan. Just give us a call.

What if you have big hopes and dreams far beyond $10,000 in the first three years? Unless you are absolutely certain (only God knows the future) that you will bring in more than $10,000, you will probably qualify. If you can envision structuring your activities so that you won't require more than $10,000 per year to operate, this plan can work for you. And what if you actually do bring in more than $10,000? When you have big hopes and dreams, you never know what God will do. Will there be a penalty if you exceed the $10,000? No.

Dear David, You say, "If you're a small organization qualifying for our $995 Self Service Program, you'll never have to file anything with the IRS except a once-a-year 5 minute Internet filing. You won't need any help with that. (When you bring in more than $50,000 annually, you will have your accountant file your 990 for you.)"

My husband told me that this is no longer true. In 2008 all 501c3's started getting notices saying that they would need to annually fill out IRS forms. Too many groups were abusing this. I hope all of your forms are up to date and fully tested. I welcome your comments. Martha Hafner, Randolph, Vermont

David's answer: Hi, Martha, There is a lot of misinformation out there. I appreciate your husband's comment and question.

Starting in 2008, all nonprofits (except churches), no matter how small, were required to begin filing annually the little 990-N. You can accomplish this online in about five minutes; no financial information is required. Before that, small nonprofits never had to file anything. The change to required filing was not because nonprofits were abusing anything. The reason was that for small nonprofits who never filed anything, the IRS didn't know whether they existed or not, whether they were still operating or not, where they were, etc.

The little 5-minute Internet filing was a way of bringing all nonprofits (except churches) into the IRS database in a simple unburdensome way. If for three years, the nonprofit didn't take the five minutes to file, it had its status revoked. This happened to 270,000 nonprofits. Usually, the reason they didn't file was because they didn't know about the new requirement. We helped a lot of them get their status reinstated.

So annual filing is quite simple until your nonprofit has an annual income of more than $50,000. At that point, you will want to consider having an accountant file your 990 return.

Now, use your e-mail list too! Your website and your e-mail list are great ways to reach the world with your Kingdom message. But they can also be sources of income for you. They are great ways for you to earn $300* again and again with very little effort.
