Catherine BrownChrist redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a [tree]." He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. Galatians 3:13

At the beginning of the Jewish New Year (5772) the Lord spoke to me of the need for the Body of Christ to come into a fresh revelation of the work of atonement that Christ accomplished on the Cross. This study is not intended to be an in-depth exposition of the atonement; rather, it is an opportunity for us to appropriate by faith what the Blood sacrifice of Christ accomplished, specifically in the area of Believers being set free from curses.

Atonement

Atonement was the complex sacrificial Old Testament rituals through which God forgave the sins of His people by the atoning blood once a year, offered by Aaron the High Priest.

Old Testament references: Leviticus 16, Leviticus 17:10-12; Numbers 29:7-11

Jesus Christ made a one-time, atoning sacrifice for the Church (see Hebrews 9:11-15).

The Protection of the Blood of Jesus

"Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story..." (Psalm 107:2)

There is power in what we speak, and when we declare Scripture over our lives, the Holy Spirit works in perfect unity with the will of the Father and the finished work of the Son to bring us into healing and wholeness. Before speaking about curses, it is important to lay a foundation that focuses on Jesus. I encourage all Believers to declare the following words before we enter into this teaching:

Through the Blood of Jesus I am redeemed out of the hand of the devil. Through the Blood of Jesus all my sins are forgiven.

In Him we have redemption through His Blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace. Ephesians 1:7

The Blood of Christ, God's Son, is cleansing me now and continually from all sin.

But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the Blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin. 1 John 1:7

Through the Blood of Jesus I am justified, made righteous, just as though I had never sinned.

Since we have now been justified by His Blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through Him. Romans 5:9

Through the Blood of Jesus I am sanctified, made holy, set apart to God.

And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through His own Blood. Hebrews 13:12

My body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. I am redeemed, cleansed, sanctified by the Blood of Jesus, therefore the devil has no more place in me and no more power over me.

Do you not know that your bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own, you were bought at a price, therefore honour God with your bodies. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

They triumphed over him by the Blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. Revelation 12:11

How Do We Recognise a Curse?

Often we can recognise a curse by cycles and/or patterns repeating in our lives

These "symptoms" are not always related to a curse as their cause or source. Trauma can also open the door to the same symptoms; also, circumstances happen in life that may not be the will of God but are not necessarily evidence of a curse.

Some examples of cycles/repeating patterns:

• Repeated illness in an individual or in their family life
• Addictions; e.g. alcoholism, promiscuity, gambling
• Work performance hampered
• Continual opposition
• Continual lack of prosperity, business failures
• Premature death
• Chronic strife, arguments, torment
• Hereditary issues
• Barrenness (physical or spiritual)

Root Causes of Curses
(See Deuteronomy 28)

• Disobedience/rebellion/sin to God/His Word
• Involvement in idolatry, pagan religions, worship of false gods
• All occult activity
• Witchcraft, manipulation, control of others
• Sexual perversion and sexual sin of all kinds
• Murder
• Dishonoring of one's parents/dishonoring of authority figures
• Ancestral sins, including demonic blood covenants, dedication
• Word curse – self-inflicted or through others
• Compromise, especially on doctrine and truth
• Cursing God
• Coveting
• Anti-Semitism

Dealing With Curses

Jesus became a curse so that we could be set free and be blessed by the Holy Spirit (Galatians 3:13). The Bible promises us, "No longer will there be any curse" (Revelation 22:3).

You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of righteous made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled Blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Hebrews 12:23b-25

The Bible tells us that the Blood of Jesus speaks a "better word" than that of Abel. What does this mean to us today? Let's consider Abel for a moment. The Bible states, "By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead" (Hebrews 11:4).

So we see that Abel is considered by God as a righteous man who offered the best of what he had as sacrifice to the Lord. As we turn to the narrative in Genesis 4, we see the unfolding of a tale of the two brothers, Cain and Abel, before the altar (a place we will define as a meeting point between God and man, where sacrifice or gift is offered, where God responds in covenant blessing to the pure and upright heart).

Cain worked the soil and, in the course of time, he brought some of the fruits of the harvest as an offering to the Lord. Abel, on the other hand, kept flocks, and he brought fat portions of some of the firstborn of his flock for the Lord. God looked with favour on Abel, but not so with Cain. One brother gave the best, but the other compromised on what he offered to the Lord. Are we guilty of Cain's sin of omission? Do we bring the best of who and what we are as love offerings to God, or do we scrimp and have an ungenerous heart toward God?

As a result of the Lord's rebuke, Cain became sullen and angry. The Lord spoke with Cain and instructed him to do what was right and to bring an appropriate sacrifice, but God also warned Cain that if he did not do what was right, that sin was crouching at his door and threatened to engulf him: "it desires to have you, but you must rule over it" (Genesis 4:6b).

Cain had an opportunity to change his life, but instead he was overcome by sinful thoughts and he lured his brother into the field where, tragically, he attacked and murdered Abel. None of this was hidden from God's sight, and indeed Abel's innocent blood "spoke" and cried out from earth to Heaven, and in response Heaven spoke to earth:

"What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground." (Genesis 4:10).

The blood of Abel had reached to our Heavenly Father and He could not ignore that innocent blood had been shed. The blood of Abel testified of his innocence and spoke of his acquittal of guilt before God; the blood of Abel was a witness to his righteousness and simultaneously was a witness of Cain's unrighteous action and sin.

God said to Cain, "Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth" (verses 11-12).

Cain was driven from God's presence as a result of his sin; he was to become a homeless wanderer, whose life would be barren and fruitless. The curse resulted in spiritual death in Cain's life.

Returning our thoughts to the verse in Hebrews, we reflect again that the Blood of Jesus speaks a "better word" than the blood of Abel. In this we understand that we have come to Christ, the Mediator of the new covenant of grace, and that His Blood speaks in Heaven to testify against sin, yet simultaneously, Messiah as the perfect sacrifice testifies for all humankind, and His imputed righteousness acquits the guilty and cleanses us from all sin. The Blood of Messiah also annuls every curse!

How Do We Break Free From a "Curse"?

In my travels around the world, particularly in Africa, I often meet people who need to embrace the reality of this truth. Let me state, however, that it is not only in Africa that Believers need to receive freedom from curses. Some folks have curses that have been operating in their lives either as a result of their own sin or as a result of their ancestor's sin. I have walked with these dear ones, to bring them into healing before the throne of Grace. It is essential that we understand the power of the Blood of Christ Jesus to speak on our behalf, to annul every demonic curse, and position us in freedom.

For dominion [all power and authority] belongs to the Lord... Psalm 22:28

The first important aspect of being set free from a curse is to establish the protection and cleansing power of Jesus Christ. Thereafter, it is important to recognise that there is a problem that requires the power of Jesus' Blood to bring breakthrough.

• Recognise (usually by revelation, but also by knowledge, understanding, wisdom)
• Confess the sin of a specific spirit in the name of Jesus
• Repent for the sin (personally, or on behalf of a family member)
• Forgive others who may have hurt you or a family member
• Renounce the specific sin(s) in Jesus' name
• Call on the name of the Lord Jesus to enable you to resist the devil (James 4:7) and commit your life to holiness and obedience to the Lord.
• Use the Word of God to make apostolic declarations of blessing over your life/your family

Declare this prayer over your life and experience the freedom Jesus has purchased for each one of us by His precious Blood:

I revoke and destroy every generational curse speaking against my life in Jesus' name.
I revoke every blood curse or vow speaking against my life in Jesus' name.
I disavow every demonically inspired covenant which has bound me and I sever every satanically induced soul tie to me in the name of Jesus.
I silence every altar speaking against me in Jesus' name.
I renounce, revoke, and destroy every satanically inspired dedication over my life in the name of Jesus.
I sever any spiritual connection with any other spirit than the Holy Spirit in Jesus' name.
I shut down every demonic access point, gate, or door in Jesus' name.
I break the power of every witchcraft spell, hex, or sorcery operating against my life in Jesus' name.
I exercise faith in the atoning Blood of Jesus Christ.
I call upon the name of the Lord Jesus and invoke His authority and power to bind and break the power of every demonic or satanic invocation speaking against my life.
I loose the Holy Spirit in every area of my life.
I re-dedicate my life in its entirety (body, spirit, and soul) to Jesus Christ.
I receive the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I choose to walk in obedience to the will of God.
I release a blessing of healing, redemption, righteousness, peace, and joy over my life and speak restoration in Jesus' name to myself and my family.
I seal this prayer in the name of Jesus and in His Blood. Amen.
