The Two Most Offensive Words on TV Today

By Britt Bennett

True Story:

Once I was in Japan, watching an American movie on TV. The movie was being broadcast in English, with Japanese subtitles. Having lived in Japan as a student and missionary, I speak the language. At one point, one of the characters in the movie shouted, "Jesus Christ!" I was curious to see how the Japanese translated this, so I looked closely at the screen. I was shocked.

The name of our Savior...our Lord...the name above all names...was translated as the s-word.

To me, the most offensive words on TV today are the names of my Savior...when they are used as a cuss word.

From that moment on, I knew there was more to my business—promoting the TVGuardian foul language filter—than just marketing and technology. From that moment on, I began to see my business as a ministry. This technology, I realized, had the potential of keeping the name of Jesus from being used as a cuss word on all the TVs in America.

The Truth about the Cable Industry:

Over 95% of homes in America receive either cable or satellite TV... What if those companies offered their viewers the option of TVGuardian built-in?

Over a space of four years, I met numerous times with every major cable and satellite company in America. You've heard their names—these are multi-billion dollar companies, some of the largest in the world. Each has millions of customers paying them an average of $85 a month.

"We will give you this technology for free," we told them. "If you have any customers who want it, you can charge them a nominal fee and we'll split the proceeds with you."

How could they say no? There were no real costs involved for them, only profit. And studies tell us that the majority of their customers are offended by the foul language they hear on TV: Time Magazine did a survey once in which they found that more people were offended by foul language on TV than by sex, nudity, violence or drug usage on TV.

This was a sure deal. And the cable companies were interested!

At first.

But then, one by one, they said no.

I had always been taught in business that the goal of every business is to make a profit. Here we had numbers that worked...a plan that made sense... But they still said no to offering their customers foul language filtering technology.

Are They Listening?

On a shelf at the back of my office, I have a file of more than 40,000 testimonials from users of the TVGuardian foul language filter, testimonials saying TVGuardian is the best thing to ever happen to TV, testimonials saying how the technology helped their families and made life easier for them. Thousands of these were sent directly to the cable and satellite companies.

At one point, one of the major cable companies reported receiving more than a thousand emails an hour asking for TVGuardian!

All we were doing was asking our fans to ask their cable companies to add TVGuardian. Yet the response of one of these companies? "Please don’t have them contact us."

"Wait a second," I replied. “Are you telling me you don't want to hear from your customers?"

"Just don’t have them contact us."

The Return of TVGuardian

Meanwhile, thousands of customers had written to us: "Why is TVGuardian no longer being produced?"

Maybe they thought we were lazy. The truth was, we were focusing all our efforts on bringing TVGuardian to families through cable and satellite. To this day, we still have a hard time explaining why the cable and satellite providers refused to add the TVGuardian technology.

Last year, in 2010, we finally decided to help our customers ourselves, releasing two new models of the TVGuardian unit—one for standard TV, the other for high definition TV. Both of these can now be found on the TVGuardian website: www.TVGuardian.com

These units, when connected to your TV, automatically mute out all forms of foul language.

Your cable or satellite provider isn't doing anything about the foul language on TV. You, however, can.
