Patricia King

Rod Myers is a "ministry of helps" kind of guy that works with our XP Team in Canada, and loves to minister in Thailand and Cambodia.

His devotional, "Taking the High Way," reveals the importance of living in a heavenly dimension while dealing with the chaos that is prevalent in the world today. He gives some keys to activating "gladness and joy" in our lives.

Taking the High Way

And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that Way. The unclean will not journey on it; wicked fools will not go about on it. No lion will be there, nor any ravenous beast; they will not be found there. But only the redeemed will walk there, and those the LORD has rescued will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away. Isaiah 35:8-10

Sometimes I like to just sit and think. And ask. And ponder. And pray. Sometimes Jesus and I really connect and revelation hits my spirit like a lightning bolt. Other times I just soak in the realization of Father's incredible love for me. Then there are the tougher times, when there seems to be only silence. But one particular morning I found myself in one of those "lightning bolt" zones.

It was a typical early morning in my "favorite chair" (we are allowed a "favorite chair" once the gray hair comes and the reading glasses can be found in diverse places around the house). I was drawn to Colossians 3:1-2: "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."

Raised with Christ

At that moment I had a revelation of what it means to be "raised with Christ." In my past understanding, this was like a religious phrase that explained that we had accepted Jesus and now could appropriate His grace in our existence on earth. In this revelation, I saw how we literally have been raised into a new dimension, to a place where we can live. Ephesians 2:6-7 says: "And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of His grace, expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus." I had known that this was our "position," but somehow I thought it was just symbolic.

For the next month I lived inside of this "higher dimension" truth. I pondered it, looked for evidence of it, tested it, ate it, and breathed it. Then the earthquake hit Japan.

Christians in Crisis

I already had a sense that the earth was groaning (Romans 8:22) and that we were in the end times, but for some reason my eyes were suddenly opened to the physical and spiritual state of the world. The unrest in the Middle East hit me like a freight train. Even in my own small circle, I saw more and more devastation as couples fought to save their marriages and young men and women admitted that they were trapped in various forms of addiction. The fact that these people were attending church and were "followers of Jesus" was a hard reality. It was then I realized that living "raised with Christ" was not just a great way to live – it is the ONLY way to live. As I was pondering this, the phrase "The times, they are a changin'" kept coming to my mind, so I looked up the song by Bob Dylan:

The Times They Are A-Changin':

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin' or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who that it's namin'
For the loser now will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside and it is ragin'
It'll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
...

When Bob Dylan wrote this song in the '60s he definitely had a sense of the turbulent times ahead. What he didn't share was a solution for living victoriously in the midst of it.

Choosing the High Way

If my fresh revelation of living in this "new dimension" was so imperative for Christians in these troubled end times, I needed some practical keys to getting there. Again, I was drawn back into Colossians 3, "...set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above..." I believe it is important to understand the two keys here:

1) Set your HEART on the higher realm. That means to desire it, long for it, be captivated by it and turn toward it. I think the best way to set your heart is to ask Holy Spirit to soften and transform it. Ask Him to reveal Jesus to you in such a way that you will fall in love with Him in a fresh and real way. Relationship with Jesus is the key to living with Him in this realm.

2) Set your MIND on the higher realm. That means to actively think about it. Strategize about how to live in it. Purposely pursue it. Ask Holy Spirit to anoint your thinking so you think on "whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable" (Philippians 4:8). Keep your mind busy with practical, heavenly thoughts, taking "captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5).

Gladness and Joy

The last part of Isaiah 35:10 that I quoted at the beginning of this devotional talks about "sorrow and sighing" fleeing away, and "gladness and joy" overtaking us. I believe that these promises will be activated in our lives as we choose to walk on the "High Way," to live in the "Heavenly Realm," and to actively choose a relationship with Jesus above all else. This truly is the only way to live.
