Helen Calder: Transition - 3 Hidden Ways God Is Working Right Now
Mar 24, 2026
Transition is the process of changing from one stage, place, or condition to another. And many of us are faced with it right now. Transition may be joyful. It may feel full of promise. But sometimes change comes that we haven't chosen and we are swept into it. A Powerful Promise If you are in a place of uncertainty, here is a powerful promise: "The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." (Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV) I pray this word brings both comfort and anticipation for what God is preparing for you. The Interruption Eighteen months ago, during a time of loss, I was waiting at an airport gate. And God showed me something I will never forget. I believe this message is relevant for many of us right now. Restlessly, I wandered to the window. In the distance was the harbor, and beyond that, the misty hills of Auckland, New Zealand. Our plane sat on the tarmac, and I watched the activity around it curiously. "Pay attention!" I heard. Into my vacant musings came the sudden clarion call of the Holy Spirit. To be honest, I wasn't in a place to hear from God. I had tamped down my emotions and halted any deep and meaningful internal conversation... or conscious prayer. It was easiest that way. After I returned home, I would have plenty of time to reflect.
"Pay attention!" Just then, there was an announcement. A flight attendant came over the speaker to apologize for a short delay. She explained that they needed to adjust the air bridge's position before the passengers could board. (Photo via Pexels) Then I heard the Lord say clearly, "You will wonder why there is a delay. I am working in the background; I am adjusting the bridge." Since that day, I have often reflected on these words the Holy Spirit spoke to me. I believe these words are for many who are in change or turmoil. 3 Ways God Is at Work in Your Transition 1. God Is Adjusting the Transition "The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives." (Psalm 37:23 NLT) I stayed at the window and watched as an operator stepped onto the air bridge. I saw it move this way and that, not in one fluid motion but in a series of adjustments. That day, I learned something about air bridges! Previously, I thought they were fixed, rather like a wharf. The boat comes in, and it has to get into the right position. The plane was not in the correct alignment, but rather than shift the plane, in this case, they adjusted the air bridge! Often in our lives, there is fine-tuning before release. Delay is not failure. What looks like a delay may be God at work. And sometimes we assume we must adjust ourselves, but God may be repositioning what connects us to the future. At other times, it may be an internal adjustment. Our Father lovingly reveals where we have drifted into effort, anxiety, or self-reliance. He is aligning us with Him (John 15:5). 2. God Is Working While You Wait "My future is in Your hands." (Psalms 31:15 NLT) Here's the thing: the destination was fixed. The runway was ready. The plane was prepared. Yet adjustments were needed before we could board the plane! And it's a reminder: God prepares the way before He releases us. He lines up people, provisions, and timing in the background. Think of David in the wilderness. There were many twists and turns in his story before he became king. Or Ruth and Naomi on the road to Bethlehem—unaware of the provision God had already set up for them.
Psalm 68:7 says, "O God, when You went out before Your people, when You marched through the wilderness..." (Photo via Pexels) Wisdom is a Person! You are not navigating this alone! God is with you, and He is for you. 3. Transition Leads to Divine Acceleration "'The time will come,' says the Lord, 'When the grain and grapes will grow faster than they can be harvested. Then the terraced vineyards on the hills of Israel will drip with sweet wine!'" (Amos 9:13 NLT) In a short time, the air bridge was properly aligned. The operator stepped out, and soon we were on our way. Later, I reflected on this. We often think of ourselves crossing a bridge in transition, but that day I saw something different. God was adjusting the bridge itself! When God has everything in order, we are released. Acceleration follows alignment. It may happen suddenly, but we recognize God has prepared the way. We may enter a period of divine acceleration, where God makes up for lost time. Yet this is often the very moment when the enemy whispers, "You're behind. You've missed God's best." What feels like a delay is often divine alignment. God is lining up your transition: people, provision, timing. Hidden work is taking place. Even when we have made mistakes, our Father is a Redeemer. Today, if this resonates with you, be encouraged. There is power in your surrender.
